Your skills in sketching really bring amazing clarity and reality to a picture. the light on iorek's armour is amazingly done. it looks very...usable!!!You really captured the essence of each character- I can see the human triumph in iofur's eyes. Your shading ability is also fantastic-I like the arena walls. everything about this pic is totally perfect. Please do more!!!

Oh and i love the way iofur's paw has little streaks behind it to show movement. It adds to the life-like quality of the picture.

That is by far my fav bear fight, it is absolutely amazingly well drawn!! The shading on their armour is brilliant (and their armour for that matter is brill as well!!) and I like the little Lyra watching in the background!!! It really shows power and anger, and you've even made the snow look real!!!

This is just so majestic- the shining armour is beautiful, the shading of the fur is beautiful, everything is so powerful and beautifully drawn! i luv the blurr of movement around Ioreks (or am i wrong?) deadly paw! The shading of the fur and the lie of the snow is so impressive! There is so much fierocity and passion in this momentous scene-both bears seem caught up in the joy and anger of the fight.i luv the way u put Lyra next to the bears, coz it shows their immense size without u exagerating. She looks indeed the vunerable little girl out of place among the armoured bears! The bears all look towering and imposing-well done!

Oh, hello! I didn't know my picture had been added here. Thanks for all the compliments. To clear up any confusion: the bear standing up is Iofur Raknison; the bear with the (apparently) lame left paw is Iorek. Iorek isn't actually biting Raknison's arm -- I just couldn't place the arm anywhere else than behind Iofur's mouth. Anyway, I would love to do more HDM illustrations (and eventually Lee's death!) just as soon as I have time. Watch this space...

i love this picture! It looks like the bears are fighting and you can see Lyra watching in the crowd woth the bears... Really cool!

The one on top is Iorek, because his chest isn't protected. Iofer had a gold-inlayed chest plate. Iorek did not. He had traditional, true armour. Good ol' Iorek. =]

Well I'm not quite sure if the other bear does, but obviously, the one on top hath no chest plate. He hath fury. =]

No, the bear standing up is Iofur. He used to have a chain mail sark (not a chest plate) but it got ripped away. Remember for a while it was hindering his back legs? The bear on all-fours is Iorek, fooling the bigger bear into thinking his left paw is injured. You can see the rock that he's about to set his back feet against before lunging.

I like the picture a lot. You can actually see that something is happening. Great job.

With one small exception, this drawing is basically exactly what I see in my head every time I read that section of the book. I'm glad to see an artist that doesn't modernize and glorify and "Hollywood-ize" their images. Fantastic.

That's an awesome representation of an awesome scene, the polished texture of the armour, the detail of the bears fur, the sense of movement, and I love that you have Lyra in the background, facing the prospectof becoming Iofur's Daemon.
One thing it does highlight tho is the need, however difficult it is to design, for the bears to have armoured fronts, Iofur looks so vulnerable rearing up.

Incredible detail. Interestingly enough, this is precisely how I pictured the courtyard-arena as well.

Come to think of it, I think the 'topmost' bear is Iofur, considering the visual details of chains connecting the various flimsy segments of armour. Iorek's - here, clearly of a solid plate mail/segmentata - was definitely more durable and while it survived dents and injuries in the fight, never came apart.

I used a set of regular graphite pencils ranging from H to 9B.

Oh, and a kneaded eraser and a blending stump (smudging stick).
