it's always described as a compass though... i always picture it being like the width of those mini-records my parents listened to singles though. i like the idea, but i think it's kinda hard to read this way.

the front of Nothern Lights has PP's one on it. I like it anyway. It's really good!

This shape of giroscope is original although I did not see the alethiometer thus. But cheer nevertheless, the draughtsman remains exceptionel.

Maybe the cage pieces are on hinges, so it can fold into more of a compass shape. This might just be when it's all extended.
