Would Jiminy Cricket be a daemon?

Postby LadyHawke » Sun Jan 04, 2009 9:33 am

I wonder....

Could Jiminy Cricket be Pinocchio's daemon? Even tho he was a cricket before he became Pinocchio's conscience, and afterwards, would that make him Pinocchio's daemon?

What do you guys think?

But isn't your consiouse like your soul and your soul is your dæmon so that would make him a daemon.

That is what I was thinkin as well. While he is hardly a spirit animal, he and Pinochio still chat about what Pinochio shudd do, and tell him he shudd and shuddn't do.

I just found it to be the only correlation I could find to the daemon thing in other literature.

I am pretty certain that a cricket daemon is mentioned in NL. But i don't think that Jiminy is one.

Well, perhaps it would be an example of the idea or myth of a daemon in our own culture (that doesn't have them) perhaps?

yay I was just thinking about that today. It would represent a dæmon in our society or we could think so. I allready had my friend read Uglies series and Twilight do you think i should make her read HDM? do you think she could read TSK without reading TGC?

My thinking too. Sign of daemons in 'our world's' stories. I haven't thought of another yet.

Hmmm. I would say to at LEAST watch the movie, then read the Subtle Knife, tho I did that and it was a little confusing. Best thing is to read first to last, I would say. You can't make her read them, of course. But I would highly, HIGHLY recommend she do.

I haven't been bitten by the Twilight bug yet, but what are 'the Uglies'? Sound interesting.

Other examples I've always thought of as analogious to daemons are:
Kitty Pryde's dragon Lockheed (Shadowcat from the X-men)
The animal forms of patronis (is that the plural!?) in the Harry Potter books seem to reflect the personalities of their owners and work as protectors, guardian angels
Not quite as good as Pan or Jiminy Cricket though admitably

I think many of the Disney Sidekicks© have daemon-like qualities, and Disney is just working on a ancient tradition of the animal companion. I'm sure the 'companion', as an archetype, which is already getting towards the idea of a daemon, is one of the oldest archetypes in literature. And it's only a small extension from that to a talking animal companion, and then a talking animal who is the soul of its human. I can think of Donkey and Mushu also being quite daemonic.

I think you maybe onto something there, Mushu could be an example of a daemon (or as close as you can come in our world) for us as well. Disney is responsible for all the pets I have ever had, and ever will, dangit! (which right now is two cats, two doves, a meat eating frog, and three horses.)

Heh heh, yeah, but he is WAYYYYY past those. He eats the largest crickets they got right now, I am soon gonna hafta go to pinkie mice.

He is an Argentine Pac Man frog, supposedly gets about as big as a dinner plate and eats mice, he has jagged little teeth, also supposed to have a full set by adulthood....

I can't seem to take a good pic of him (or her) but he is ubber cool......

The dragon that was one of the 'family protectors' that helped Mulan, in the Disney movie. Small, voice of Eddie Murphy.....

aren't patronises (from Harry Potter) the opposite of daemons?

I don't think so, because they are based on what you are like, like daemons, i may be wrong as i haven't read HP for some time now.

I would say that they are similar to daemons in that they are an animal representation of that person, the animal spirit, an 'olde' idea  , but I would say that as far as being the conscience, and speaking and interacting with the person, they (the patronises) don't do that.
