You would think a lot of people in here never heard of the idea of a short story before. It's a long established genre of fiction. Not everything related to HDM has to be a novel length epic battle for the fate of multiple worlds.

Pullman is giving a lot more to his readers with Lyra's Oxford than those who are disappointed by it's length realize.
