Not an entirely bad idea Lyra&Pan... It might show up in The Book of Dust - we're still a little hazy on what we'll see of course, but I certainly think it's a possibility...

PP has already said that Will becomes a doctor.

Doctor Who?
Why not? We already know that - except under very exceptional circumstances which are out of the Doctor's control - the Tardis cannot travel to alternate universes. That's why, among other reasons, the Doctor can't revisit his own past and remedy his previous mistakes.
So - no sneaky visits to L-world for you!

I know that Will becomes a doctor, but why not PP write a story for his life after TAS? Exept if you all only care about which career he followed.

In the newer editions of TAS, there is a small bit at the end called Lantern Slides, which contain various titbits of info, including Will becoming a doctor in his later life. I dont know what else it says, as i only know it exists and it mentions Will being a doctor.

We know, of course, that Lyra becomes a Fellow of Jordan College!

You wonder why there would be a dead man's land in Lyra's world? Well, didn't the cast-out angels have a fight? And that's when it was created. By the raw, incredible power of a battle on that scale! That's my theory.

I enjoyed every word written in this book,
Pullman has that effect on me,
But that doesnt mean i didnt find it extremely frustrating!!
Once again, he sucked me into his world, i was hopelessly lost, and then the story finished. Just like that, and it left me practically begging and screaming for more!
i thourougly enjoyed it though and im glad i bough it. definately.

Lyra's Oxford
I thought Lyra's Oxford was really great and I was glad to get a peak into Lyra's life after the trilogy. However at the end I thought to myself, "What, is it already over!" I really wished Philip Pullman had written it longer...I guess i'm just sad that there won't be another full length Lyra and Will story. Can't wait for the Book of Dust though!

Expected more?
I wish people wouldn't try to argue would someone says they felt the story "sucked". That is an opinion and not really an arguable point. You can't state fact to try to change an opinion.
That said, yes I felt Lyra's Oxford was a bit of a disappointment. The main thing that bothered me was Lyra's wonderful, colorful way of speaking changed from the trilogy. At first when I started reading TGC, I was somewhat annoyed at the way her character spoke; then I absolutely fell in love with it! I realize LO is two years after the events of TAS and maybe Lyra has "grown up" a bit. But I still wish Pullman hadn't changed the way she talked. It made her more endearing; to me anyway.

'Ent that right.
I loved Lyra so much more in NL, before Will arrived. I think she lost some of her character when the spotlight had to be shared between the two of them.

I felt the same way, but I also felt that NL was 'Lyra's book', TSK was 'Will's book' and TAS was shared between them. It didn't really bother me, because I ended up loving Will as a character as much as I loved Lyra.

I don't think LO should be viewed as a continuation of HDM as such; it's more a glimpse of a maturing Lyra, but still learning about herself and her place in the world (as anybody should be if they're still breathing).
It's a carefully-constructed book, and the relevance of some of the material will only become apparent in TBoD, as I understand it. If this is so, then we may be graced with further stories about Mary Malone as well, which would round things out nicely.
What worries me is LO was published in 2003, Once Upon... is coming out in 2008, there may well be a third small volume on Will from what PP has hinted at - in 2013??
Will we only see TBoD some time after this "trilogy" has been completed? At this rate, I'll be reading it to my granddaughter, not my daughter!
Maybe this should be with the favourite lines thread, but I'm putting it here anyway. It stopped me in my tracks and took me back to the ending of TAS, and what the books have done to me...(page 30):
Pan had told her she was too soft and too warm-hearted, but it was no good telling her about it. Since she and Will had parted two years before, the slightest thing had the power to move her to pity and distress; it felt as if her heart were bruised forever.

What I like most about LO is that it shows that Lyra was a character whom Pullman couldn't bear to leave behind. She grabbed him and shouted at him and insisted her story be told. Since I thought Lyra had more of a story to be told after HDM, I was happy that Pullman thought so too.

Re: did anyone find this book a disappointment?
LO wasn't hugely impressive, but I don't think it has to be. It was like getting a letter from an old friend, in a sense, saying "I'm doing well, thanks for asking, this is what I've been doing since we last spoke..." I rather liked it. The additional features were nice, too.
It really isn't fair to compare LO to HDM if you ask me. HDM was a whole epic trilogy; LO was something of a catching up note. I wasn't expecting it to thrill me or put me on the edge of my seat or explain everything I had questions about, and if you ask me, that's where a lot of people go wrong when it comes to companion books. They expect them to be as great as the actual series. But that wasn't the intention, now, was it?
HDM was a beautiful epic, yes. And LO was a nice companion. But that's all it had to be. If it were as amazing as the trilogy it'd've overshadowed it. Really LO was, at least for me, a taste of things to come *cough*BoD*cough* and a way to catch up with the girl we'd gotten to know so well.
