It's one of the Lantern Slides in the omnibus of the three, after TAS. Can't quote it exactly as I don't have it on hand, but it said basically that he had to pretend to make mistakes through medical school so he wouldn't be suspicious, and as a doctor he had to make a wrong diagnosis occasionally for the same reason.
To be myself, I have to put on an act.

TAS10 (4th Lantern slide) Will gained "a sense of feeling without touching, of knowing without spoiling, of apprehending without calculating," which is reawakened when Will studies medicine. He proves to be such a gifted diagnostician that he finds himself engaged in a "lifelong process of learning to explain" his rare talent.

Also readerville.com... Pullman: "I think [Will] will go home and ... Later I think he'll go to medical school and become a doctor."

i really loved the HDM trilogy and i also liked Lyra's Oxford.
it i did find it kind of short but i think that's because i want so much more and i cant wait for the BOD.

i just love this whole story (HDm and LO included) and if i had it my way it would never end.

:D :D :D :D :D :) :P

I supose because the first book was, in my opinion, such an amazing book, I set my expectations too high, it was still a great book, and I wouldn't go so far as to say it was a disappointment.
Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where the heck is the ceiling?

I liked it as something new, instead of continually re-reading the HDM trilogy. It may not be as impressive as the other books, but it's still a good book to read. I love the entire series. Phillip Pullman needs to hurry up and get those other books done!!!!!!!

There are lots and lots of books in the world, you know. You don't have to read the same thing over and over again, as if it were a comfort blanket

That doesn't mean you can't reread books. If they truly matter to you you should be able to find new things in them upon each rereading.

One quick question about the lantern slides...I Finally bought the box set of HDM instead of renting them from the library over and over again...Only to find out that the lantern slides are not in that box set. I heard it’s only in the 10th anniversary addition and the HDM book where all the books are put together into one. Is this true?

Yeah, the 10th anniversary editions have them. Not so sure about the combined book. But you can also get the lantern slides in these editions (which I have).

Imo the book was ok. It did what it was supposed to great - show how Lyra was doing after TAS, and also connect TAS with the BoD. Sure, it wasn't very long, but it wasn't supposed to be. :)

Lyra's Oxford, I think, was not meant to be a novel but more of a story instead.

Guessing, here.

Obviously the others were better...Did anyone REALLY think this would be able to compare to those 3 books? It was good for what it was, and as far as I am concernd, ANYTHING about HDM is good.

I just read this book in about 35 minutes, and I have to say that I thought is was brilliant. There are a few things that could come from this short story alone, and that is a great thing. Like what exactly does Sebastion Makepeace do? How many other Witches will be after Lyra? And I do like that she hasnt forgotten Will, but that she is still in love with him, even though its not stated in the book. It's only been 2 years since TAS, so she is still young and room for plenty of more stuff to happen.
Thinking of you, wherever you are. We pray for our sorrows to end and our hearts to blend. Now I will step forward to realize this wish. And who knows: starting a new journey may not be so hard, or maybe it's already begun. There are many worlds, but they share the same sky. 1 sky--1 destiny.

Well I finally got this book in the mail yesterday and read it in about half an hour. Despite the fact it was very short, which I assumed was going to be a disappointment, it wasn't at all. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, as soon as I started on the first few lines I was already thrilled to be once again 'witnessing' the adventures of Lyra and Pan. It was a perfect short story, and leaves me hungry for more. Just eager to hear when The Book of Dust is going to be released, I'm always on the lookout for news about that one.

I haven't read it yet, so I didn't vote, tho I am POSITIVE it won't 'suck', while I ain't got a hold of LO yet, I have read some of Pullman's other stuff, and I love it all. He has replaced Tolkien to me, and even Rowlings cuddn't do that. So I know I will love it, but at least I have a better idea of what it's about. I can't see ANYTHING Pullman writes as 'sucking'......

But I am SUPPOSED to get my copy next week, so I will revisit this thread after I have hungrily consumed it....
