LO: What do you think about Lyra's Oxford?

Postby Isobel » Sun Apr 06, 2003 5:04 am

Are you glad that PP is doing a aequel, or do you wish he'd left it at the end of TAS and not said any more about Lyra and/or Will? I think Lyra's Oxford will be good if it's just a few stories about her a few years later and some maps and pictures, but I don't want to see her and Will get back together, or have it be the whole story of the rest of Lyra's life. Also, do you think HDM is going to turn into one of those series that goes on as long as the author can make money out of it? I kind of got the impression from some of the articles that it might be extended beyond BoD. I dunno, I want more HDM but I also don't want it to get too drawn out and formulaic, like a lot of series do.

I think that he shouldnt have even mentioned Lyra again.
The Book of Dust is ok, but the chapter about Lyra is sort of dumb... but a whole book about her would be disastrous...
I might not end up reading it.

I know what you mean. I'll definitely read it, but I do sort of think it would have been best if he had avoided any sequels. Since he's decided not to, though, I'll read it, and hopefully it will be good.

I'm definitly going to read any books he puts out that go along with this series. I agree that he should definitly not have will and Lyra be together again because it would pretty much ruin the series ...maybe he should write some prequels? lol

I got the impression the plot and setting of it would be something that would be Wunderkind-like  . Well, without the fan-fic-ness. (Yeah, I'm using great words today...)

that makes sense with out the bold part... I think.

one problem with the idea of another book about Lyra: if things are easier for Lyra than they were in the trilogy it'll seem like the story isn't as important, but if they're harder it'll belittle what she's done before.
*sigh* Well, at least you tried.

Hmm, I think Lyra's Oxford is gonna be a double-edged sword... it'll be cool and all to read more about Lyra, but I'm worried that it might take away some of the strength of the trilogy- the ending of TAS was really good, and I didn't think anything important needed to be wrapped up. Continuing Lyra's story, if only in a short story, might be taking it too far. But still. It's cool, and I'll be placing an advance order as soon as possible...

I don't think either can be preordered *yet* but amazon'll probably have that available closer to the release dates.

hmm, my guess would be maybe around august for Lyra's Oxford (will be released in october).. still no release date at all for the Book of Dust, so that could be anyone's guess.

I don't know what to think. But I know that Pullman WILL make it intruiging. Maybe like "The Tin Princess". Who knows? He might screw it all up like Frank Herbert to Dune or Christopher Tolkein to LOTR. *blink* Lost brain...temorarily...will...be...back...soon...i...think...

in the dark materials, when you think about it, it's really about lyra fulfilling the prophecies made about her. as long as the sequels don't try to stretch that out, or bring will back into some silly tangle, i'm fine with it.

of his beloved arises? doesn't his secret insight
into her pure features come from the pure constellations?"

What I think is gonna be the weirdest thing is how Lyra is suddenly going to be older than me. ^^; Seriously, though. She goes from being a child two years younger than I am to an young woman (and her society, probably pretty close to adulthood) who's two years older than me! Isn't anyone else gonna be freaked out by this? I don't really wanna see Lyra so old. I mean, I'm freakishly happy that this new book is coming out and all, but it will be weird. What if it's set around Midsummer's Day and Pullman writes a cheesy, angsty love scene or something, for Lyra and Will? *shudders* or worse yet, what if Lyra has a fiancee, or a boyfriend or something? Won't that just be -weird-?
But at the same time, you have to look at it not so much of a continuation of the series (which is really isn't) as just a new book with familar characters. It's a story about Lyra, and we all love her (for the most part) so it should be enjoyable. I just hope Phil doesn't make a complete botch of it...
