I prefer making "owned" pictures- those ones of people aobut to hurt in amusing ways. My younger borther prefers altering pictures of a rater cute looking bunny rabbit to depict him being murdered in hideous ways. I kid you not. Should I tell someone?

It's not high on my priority list either. We already tried, remember? I made that post because a lot of other people were posting their ideas on circumventing the ending. We should do what you said- agree to disagree. To all grazers and nebies out there, don't try arguing with people over this- head rolled last time.

I think you mentioned elsewhere you would like explanation on the philosophy of the end. Well, I could provide a full commentary, but it would be extensive. Rather, I'd recommend one of these:

Just a small selection, there are plenty more. I haven't read most of them, although I hear good things about Darkness Visible. On that note, why don't you write a book? "Why Pullman Scuffed the Ending" or something to that effect. :?:

Actually I asked if there was any evidence that Will and Lyra, when beign separated, were giving much thought to how deep and philosphical their actions would be to us observers beyond the fourth wall. But let's not go there.

I actually quite enjoy finding plot holes in things. Maybe I'll publish a collection: "Plot holes in various well-known works of fiction". :P I have a few lists already If anyone is interested, they are freely availbale. Please don't hesitate to ask.

Actually, save "one" error, HDM is pretty good on this- it only has three, versus almost thirty for some other works of fiction, which shall remain nameless. You can usually get about a dozen if you look hard. Pullman is very skilled here. He only ever lets errors exist when they're absolutely essential to his story- ie I haven't found any "stupid" ones that a lot of authors/filmmakers don't notice.

I have been thinking...when the angel said she would close all the windows to stop lyra and will wasting time looking for them why not just tell them where they are? Or perhaps she was jealous who knows....
Let's just say that if complete and utter chaos was lightning, he'd be the sort to stand on a hilltop in a thunderstorm wearing wet copper armour and shouting 'All gods are bastards'.

I think she didn't trust them to close the windows. I mean, face it, would you? :P

Something i never understood about why Will and Lyra couldn't be together was why couldn't you just have two windows open, what difference would it make? Even if they did need to build the kingdom of heaven in their own worlds, wouldn't they find it easier if they were together?

In the ending of TAS, Lyra and Will are told by Xaphania that Dust renews itself but at a slow rate. Even if they were to put in time and effort to teach people to lead kind and curious lives, they would:
renew enough to replace what is lost through one window. (TAS 441)

Since the "one window" must be the one out of the world of the dead, they cannot keep a window between their worlds open. Doing so would cause the slow depletion of Dust and eventually bring about the end of existence.

Yes but surely if Will and Lyra did preach happiness and sharing and all the other things they had to do in their worlds then surely enough dust would be being replenished by two whole worlds to allow for one more window?! :?:

maybe you should read the part about there only being enough Dust for one window again

one of the morals of the story is that you have to do your best with what you've got in any situation, no matter how difficult it my be. The rest of Lyra and Will's earthly lives is MUCH shorter than eternity. I think they'll be ok.

Yes i agree that you have to get the best out of a situation but all i'm saying is that surely if dust has been leaking out of windows for thousands of years and not ran out surely a window could stay open for the rest of Will and Lyra's lifetimes, which in comparrision would seem tiny.

(Don't know whether to be insulted by recommendation to re-read the section about only being allowed one window, i have read TASG 5 times now! So i think that i am allowed just to speculate :? )

Dust has been leaking out of the universe for years. If Lyra and Will do their best to establish the Republic of Heaven in their own worlds that should be enough to just barely make enough Dust to replace what has been lost through the thousands of windows over hundreds of years. Don't forget about the abyss and the opening Lord Asriel ripped in the Aurora Borealis. Specters feed on Dust as well, and a new one is created every time a new window is made.

Xaphania made it perfectly clear that all but one of windows had to be closed. It's at the top of page 492 in my copy of the book. There is also the important bit about both of them having much more important work to do than look for a way to be together. However she did say that they could learn a form of traveling through the world similar to how the bene elim and John Parry did it. A way of "seeing" that can be finely tuned over a period of many years. I think that sounds promising.

You can speculate all you want, and read the books as many times you wish, but the simple truth is that it is not possible for Lyra and Will to have their own personal bootycall window.

I understand that the ending is tragic, but that's life. That's the point.

but i thought that it said when Will and Lyra came back from realising thir love that they firstly made the dust start to fall and that they were surrounded by dust. It's just a thought.

Have fun unsheathing imaginary internet swords and speculating over something the story plainly says is both impossible and a waste of time Image
