My girlfriend has been a huge HDM fan since the first book appeared. I first heard about it after I met her. So for the movie, I started reading it and hav finished TAS over the holidays. And sure enough, she did ask me what I would have done in Will's place at the end.... :| Well, better think of a good answer.

First I thought about that two-window-solution as well. Hell, make the windows smaller or whatever - it's just for a couple of decades. Another possibility would have been to cut a new window once or twice a year and close it again. Ok, that would make a Specter each time, but since angels can obviously deal with them (they protect Mary in Cittagazze and Xaphania also allows will to cut that practicing window for her saying she would take care of the Specter), they could take turns or whatever neutralising a few dozen Specters more. There were still scores of them around anyway. After all Lyra and Will had done for them...

But the only truly romantic solution, of course, would have been to stay together in the Mulefa world for the few years they would have and not allow anything to part them again. At least I could satisfy my girlfriend with that one.

I understand what you mean here, but;

You'll have to keep this as just a thing to satisfy your girlfriend, because that wouldn't work.

You mean because of all that terribly important republic-building they had to do in their own worlds?

Xanphania told them to move on, that it was a waste to use up their lives trying to be together when they had another task to do. The only way that I can think of to move between the worlds, without wasting time looking for a portal, or making a specter, is how the angels travel. Dang.

There is plenty of fan fiction, some of outstanding quality, that explores all kinds of permutations on the Will and Lyra meet again theme. So if Mr. Pullman doesn't write about them meeting, and doesn't write an additional work that absolutely forecloses the possibility, those who wish to imagine a future meeting can do so.

Thats the wonderful thing about the ending, it can go any way you want it to. Me? I believe Lyra learnt the Alethiometer again and after many years found a solution to their separation. That keeps me from falling to pieces...

It seems Lyra and Will are a great deal wiser than many of you, I am thankful the decision was in their hands.

Do remember that they will not die sad and alone. There is no 'the one' no matter how romantic your ideals. Will and Lyra felt love, and they can do so again, but this time with people from their own worlds. Granted they will never forget each other, but as Benjamin Disraeli would say; "The magic of first love is our ignorance that it can never end."

Pay attention to Mr Anderson, kids. They will love again. It will be different, but the same.

Love surges from life and is not long restrained by loss.

I understand that the ending is tragic, but that's life. That's the point.

Why should it be tragic? One can always view Lyra and Will's relationship as an example of first love and sexual awakening. Is it difficult to consider that one day, one of them or both will find someone else for a more adult relationship?

I believe he's said he'll write a Lyra's Oxford-type story about Will after The Book of Dust. But my faulty memory might be full of cadswallop and piffleswaf.

Pullman Said:
Lyra's Oxford was a dark red book. Once Upon a Time in the North will be a dark blue book. There still remains a green book. And that will be Will's book. Eventually

Its from Wikipedia which isnt always reliable but but I'm sure its from Pullman himself.

Good Enough?

I saw the statement from Pullman somewhere too that Will and Lyra will not reunite. I'm new to these books—just finished about a month ago—and I found that hard to take. I've posted about this somewhere here already, but what I've come to see now is that Pullman knows his characters and that is something that he knows about them. What he will or won't write about them is to be seen, but a couple of things have settled about this for me by now. First, he had to show that there was no remaining need for the Authority, so his heros were revealed to people who would willingly choose to put the well being of others above their own happiness. When they learned of the one possible door, they both immediately knew what that meant; nobody had to lay down a law for them because there was no doubt that they were now truly free. They made their decision together and faithflly because they are the strong heros that they are. And the second thing I noticed ... maybe not everyone would agree with me, but I don't want to see them become bored with each other in a few years when they learn to know more specifically what they want out of life, what their talents are, what they like, what they find funny, etc. This way they can have both—the perfect experience of their moment together and also becoming whatever they wish to become. I think enough hints have been given about what that will be that I don't worry that they will ever become ordinary lifeless people. The understanding of the altheometer was probably only in its infancy when Lyra first took it up compared with the knowledge she will advance for it. Will of course is a mystery but we know he was still drawing strength from her 60 years later so something interesting must have been happening for him.

I thought of a possibly plausible storyline that could bring them back together again, but it will never happen.

Would them meeting again not sort of make the entire point of the books obsolete?
