The Butterfly Tattoo US Premiere!

Postby DutchCrunch on Wed Sep 17, 2008 10:01 pm

Philip Pullman’s The Butterfly Tattoo will celebrate its US-premiere at the 2008 edition of the New York International Independent Film Festival. The Butterfly Tattoo is the opening feature in the big theatre on Friday 19 September at 4.10 PM. Director Phil Hawkins and lead actress Jessica Blake will be in attendance.

Violent revenge makes a nightmare of love’s young dream in this adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Philip Pullman (author of The Golden Compass). Chris and Jenny are teenage lovers from the gritty side of modern Oxford: Chris a naïve lad, suspended between school and college, and Jenny a free spirit seeking to escape a traumatised childhood. Their innocent passion is still fresh when they are caught in the crossfire, as Carson, a gangster with a grudge, comes looking for Chris’s boss, to avenge events from long ago. There are echoes of Romeo and Juliet, as heady romance gives way to growing suspense when Carson closes in, until, in a final eruption of violence, the star-crossed lovers are sundered forever.

The film is currently enjoying early success in Europe with tie-in educational campaigns in Sweden and the UK, a film edition of the novel in the Netherlands and a number of festival screenings. The premiere at the Film by the Sea festival in the Netherlands (which also premiered the Coen Brothers' latest feature, Burn After Reading) resulted in an audience appreciation of 4 out of 5 stars and nation-wide media attention.

Director Phil Hawkins’ previous feature won an award at New York 2006 edition of the Festival, and appeared on Steven Spielberg’s “On the Lot”. The script, by Stephen Potts, has been publicly praised by Philip Pullman himself.

The Butterfly Tattoo introduces a fresh young cast, a soundtrack of unsigned bands from Oxford’s vibrant music scene, and a score by veteran composer Enaudi –all marshalled to tell a heartbreaking story of love and death.

If you wish to attend the screening please contact the producers at production@tbtproject.com or buy tickets directly from the festival on http://www.nyfilmvideo.com.

P.S. Love to all you sraffies!

of his beloved arises? doesn't his secret insight
