Yeah, the simplistic division of good/evil based on species and accent is pretty worrying, but it's not exactly going to turn a kid into a racist.
I only read one or two when I was at their target age, and later my problem became reading them too close together so it became apparent how formulaic they were - a problem encountered by anyone so prolific, of course.

Anyway. May the his afterlife be loaded with 'otroot soup and singing rodents and such.
Hey baby, what's your callsign?

Diana Wynne Jones, writer

Looking up the page, I'm beginning to feel like the Angel of Death. :(

You're the one who pays the most attention?
I'll miss Diana Wynne Jones more than I'll miss Elizabeth Taylor.

What to say? Elisabeth Sladen, actor.

It was the unexpectedness of the announcement that was so shocking. She hadn't looked particularly ill in the last SJA series.

A lot of men of a certain age are feeling rather sad today. Children too, of course.

we all know what happened today. i don't want to say rest in peace or some stupid ~*iguana*~ ~*pineapples*~ like that. may your atoms traverse the universes forever with a doctor, ES.

There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious—makes you so sick at heart—that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all

I would like to add this: in so many cases when someone who used to be famous dies - especially an artist - we learn that "so-and-so was about to make a comeback" and you're left wondering whether that comeback would have worked out.

Not so with ES. She seized the opportunity to bring SJS back and made a thumping success of it. She was very fortunate and so were we.

Sammy Wanjiru, Olympic Marathon Champion and Record Holder. His run in Beijing was EPIC. And now he's dead at 24. Sad, very sad.

Bert Jansch, singer, composer and guitarist par excellence. His version of Blackwaterside inspired one of my own favourite stories.

I was out all night drinking to the memory of Christopher Hitchens. There will never be another quite the same.
