short little book, not new, about some fairly normal people as opposed to his dark materials, anyone besides me read it?

it's not that short. it's a full novel technically.

i've read it, thought it good.

well it seems short to me as i'm one for longer novels, but whatever. i did enjoy it, but i was a little confused. this is due to my tendency to read too fast and miss things, so i probably should go back and reread it.

i don't follow exactly. when you say 'read' do you mean past tense referring to yourself, past tense referring to cookie, or imperative tense? if it's the first you're going to have to clarify what you meant about cookie.

Yeah I read it too
In my very humble opinion it is right up there with Sally and crew. The ending is quite surprising. Pullman has turned an essentially simple tale into a great story with maybe not so many twists, but a great ending. Nice read.

I read it years ago, but I think I enjoyed it. This one is completely realistic, right? I can't remember...

Don't know about realistic. But it is set in around 2000 or so I guess. And there are no other worlds, daemons or non earthly things.

The White Mercedes... Is this the one which was renamed The Butterfly Tattoo? I saw it in a bookstore, thought it sounded intriguing, though I knew better than to think my mum would buy it and I realised that my incredibly crappy library wouldn't have it. So I browsed through it and read the end, which didn't really make sense without reading the rest of the book. Obviously.

I'd say you need the rest of the book to understand, yes. The book is only about $5 though, right? Maybe you can look for coins stuck in the couch or offer to do all the chores for a year or two...might just work.

Australian dollars aren't worth much.

My copy cost £3.99, which would be $7.00 US, $8.20 CA, and $9.35 AU.

So while $20 australian might seem a lot it is in fact only £8.50, which is what a thick paperback, or a smaller hardback normally costs.

So there. Erm...

Well it certainly isn't a thick paperback, nor a small hardback. It is a pretty small and short story. Longer than Lyra's Oxford, but not even close to Sally Lockhart books. So those worthless AUS$20 are quite a lot to ask for this book. Too bad it was just Christmas...

I resent the fact that you think our wonderful currency is worthless.
