Is Writing a Letter Pointless?

Postby manda » Sun Dec 11, 2005 10:43 am

Sorry for starting this useless thread, but anyway, has anyone ever written to PP? And if so, have you ever received a response? I'm asking this because I was planning on writing a letter but then was discouraged by the amount of money it would take to send a letter from Australia to Britain. So if you could please respond I'd be much pleased.

You could always give it a shot. I wrote a letter to Anand Tucker, and I'm sending it tommorow. I want to audition for Lyra in the movie, you see.

Lol. I read that. I wish I wasn't Chinese. It's such a drawback.

Yes it is! They're so many things I want to do which I can't because I'm Chinese and ugly!

I highly doubt you're ugly... and what is stopping you doing what you want? I mean, I'm going to audition for Lyra, but I'm a brunette.
Let them try and stop me! So don't give up that easily.

Please look to see what threads there already exist before posting new ones. There are several threads around about this issue in this forum. And erm, it's not that expensive to send post to the UK from Oz you know...

Sweet. Please check this forum before posting random stuff about auditioning.

Yes, it's bad luck on your part, but please could you talk about it in this forum.

erm, the casting director?

People, instead of going crazy and posting like mad, just have a look around before you post. If there already is a thread where you can say what you have say, do it there. If you have questions, ask us, we're here to help.

Manda! Lots of people have gotten replies from Philip Pullman to letters they've sent. You can see some of them here. He does answer a lot of mail; if you write an interesting letter you will probably get a reply. Being from Australia will help more than hinder, authors love replying to letters from overseas. :)
Q: If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God tell you when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
Pullman: Well, I'm retiring, would you like to take it on ?

I am not just posting random stuff about auditions!
I am trying to be nice to a girl who thinks being Chinese hinders her, and used my situation as an example!
I kind of did notice the Movie Section, you know!

i got a response, that's how i learned about the Plays. i sent it through Knopf books, i think. read in interview that only the good letters get sent on to PP. remembers stamp from Oxford and "Royal Mail Oxford" thing on envelope. yay me.

excuse small sentences. i jammed (maybe broke) my left index finger today, it's hard to type.

You're lucky (not about the finger, I mean the letter)!
I really hope Anand Tucker writes back. I know he probably won't, but it's worth a try!

c/o his agent?

Personally I'd try (just to see if it got there you know):

Anand Tucker,
New Line (yer no, place wit obbits)
Hollywood
America

I'm still reminded of a postcard I recieved from a good friend. He'd forgotten my address totally. So he wrote my name. Then drew an overhead streetmap of my area, and marked whereabouts my house was.

Being a thirty-something white bloke hindes me.

When I was a lad I wrote to NASA and didn't think any more of it, a few weeks later and i get this really nice reply with loads of free stuff. (I was really into the Voyager missions) Look, just write! You never know!

well...he wrote my address, wrote "Dear Alexandra," and signed it (meaning all of those words were handwritten). other than that, it was basically not personal and no new news, it's about a year and a half old now. but still..... (:

Well it's said he only personally replies when a letter asks something of interest.

So nyuh. :P

maybe it smells good, (your finger that is)

anywyas, i sent my letter to three diffrent places and i got a reply, a real one not a form letter, i got it about a month after i wrote, PP even adressed the envelope *feels happy* which i can tell becasue the handwriting matched his signature and the writing i saw on that page that shows other peoples letters. and then about 6 months after i sent the letters to him, i got a form letter reply. which i think is quite funny. :)
