Letter has been sent
That's right! Believe it or not, I have actually SENT the letter I've been meaning to send for the last year or so. I know! I can't believe it either! Anyway, here's a copy of what was sent (I changed it quite a bit from the last draft on the boards... I think it sounds ok, but it's too late to change anything anyway, so live with it). Now we can procrastinate on the second letter for NEXT year. (Note: I don't know how long it'll take to Pullman, whether he'll respond at all, and if he does, when it'll get back to me. Could take awhile.)
(sent July 29th 2003)
Dear Mr. Pullman:
This letter comes to you from the fans and staff on BridgeToTheStars.Net; a website dedicated to His Dark Materials. Together we have come up with a few questions for you, and if you could take a few minutes to answer them we would greatly appreciate it.
1) In the discussion at Readerville in February 2001, the last sentence of your post got cut off: "He and Mary will be close friends for all their lives. She is the one who will tell him how to imagine his way into o" Most people think that you were going to say "other worlds": is that indeed what you were going to say? (Another theory says that you deliberately cut it off at that point, just to drive us all nuts...)
2) What determines who becomes an angel? Baruch was saved from the Land of the Dead by Balthamos- how exactly was he saved? Does the ghost merge with the dæmon/soul to become an angel?
3) While you've said in a few interviews that you don't want much (if anything) to do with the film version, is there a particular character or event you would miss if it got cut because it isn't integral to the story line?
4) We're all looking forward to The Book of Dust and Lyra's Oxford: have there been any recent developments with them that you can tell us about? Also, beside those two, what are you working on, or want to work on in the future?
5) Finally, we've heard about a website that you're planning on setting up in order to "keep in touch with readers more frequently." What will this involve, and when do you think it will be online?
Thank you very much for reading this letter and (hopefully) answering a few of the questions in it. Your books are thrilling, and have inspired and touched many of us.

I joined this forum shortly after turning 17, and for several years was liable to be
any combination of angry, self-righteous, naive, uninformed, curt and belligerent.
Luckily this teenage attitude is only occasionally evident in my posts - but where
it is, I apologise, and ask you to read them with the understanding that I am no
longer quite so consumed by any of those characteristics.

nice one. I didn't have the guts to write a letter asking what he said after the readerville interview for fear of rejection
and ive been pondering over the angel issue for some time.
How cool would it be to have PP on this website like on readerville *begins to drool, hands slip off keyboard from sweat* Hope

...and now to start on letter number 2. Anybody have any good suggestions for questions? I would probably ask just how old Asriel is... if the year is the same in Lyra's world as our own, he would be in his late 50s, early 60s, but if not, then I'd guess he was more 40ish. Something along those lines. Also, just how much time actually passes in the course of the books, because it's getting really frustrating to try to figure it out on my own, with all the much laters and eventuallys and after awhiles...

ASK HIM ABOUT WHAT THE daemons DID!!!!!! Settle the dispute once and for all please. I doubt PP wanted it to be thought of as animal sex
.Im sure theres a few good explanation to it like the daemons were let in on the imagination thing and were told not to tell Will and Lyra until they were ready
. so PLEASE ask that one. . .

I'm quite sure it isn't animal sex... At any rate, it seems to me there was a reason why that information was left out of TAS, possibly it is being saved for LO or TBOD. Ask anyway, by all means, but I'm not sure if you'll get a proper answer for that yet!

PP rarely gives a proper answer in my opinion. It's worth a shot though.but I'm not sure if you'll get a proper answer for that yet!
You could ask if any characters were based slightly on himself or something i suppose. . .

Don't forget to ask what's going on with the Lyra's Oxford delay, if you get it out in time.

Perhaps another question (or maybe this should be to the publishers) - what is the font used on the covers?
