They shot it yes, but the effects are still unfinished.

From wikipedia:

To what was posted in the media, the film was cut by the studio quite a bit earlier than it may have seemed. This meant that visuals were not all completed to a sufficient and presentable standard. To finish the visual effects on Weitz version of the film may prove to be prohibitively expensive. He's going to be handing in a version of the film and a budget to the studio; but he would be surprised if they agree to fund it. And they still hold the rights to the film, so that would be the only way a version would be completed.

That also includes the ending, because Weitz still intends to add to his version when there are no sequels.

Yeah, you know. They're nearly done.

Well, you can see clips of most of the ending scene(s) everywhere.

Well, YouTube, anyway.

That are just little, very little clips from the trailer.

You've read my thoughts! The director's cut DVD (or, preferably, an Extended Edition, but that's a pie in the sky at this point) is the most profitable investment New Line can make this year, besides investing in The Subtle Knife. An investment in a director's cut is a direct investment in the profitability of the sequels and then some!

Honestly... no. Look at the thread "The Future of the HDM film trilogy" for more of my thoughts on this, but I think it stands a better chance that we'll get a director's cut with the original ending if we wait until after at least the Subtle Knife is made. And if that's so, I feel it'll be worth the wait.

Er... I removed that bit from Wikipedia. If there's no reliable published source, it can't go in the article.

Yeah, that wouldn't make sense. Seeing that we saw a lot of finished (if not, nearly finished) effects shots of the sequence in the trailer, right before the announcement was made about the cut... my guess is that the scene is practically finished, and anything they touch up on it is purely small details.

I don't know about that... the trailer shots would naturally be story-focused, i.e., what was left in the movie. And for all we know, Weitz intentionally shot more than he thought would go in the theatrical, just like Peter Jackson did. It wouldn't surprise me if money was a concern in making the Director's Cut. But until it's sourced, we can't really be certain.

It's fact that Weitz would need a bunch of money to finish his Director's Cut because many effects are unfinished. More Infos ---> PM

Sure, he'd probably need a good amount of money... which is why I hope the next two will be made. If the trilogy is completed it will be a hell of a lot more likely that extended or alternate editions of the films will be presented, because the studio will have the money and inclination to do so...

I reckon Chris Weitz/New Line Cinema's cash would be better spent making The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass than a Director's Cut.

Who knows.

A Director's Cut would show many pessimistic viewers that golden compass is better as they thought and so more people would go into the sequels.

The big question is:

Do they have enough money to make both ?

I reckon, what with very stingy and scrooge-like executives at New Line, the answer is probably...

Spoiler:
No.

New line alone not but with Warner...maybe.

Yeah, now that Warner Bros. is involved... I think that newfound hope for the trilogy has blossomed. It's another reason I think that the movies will be more faithful than the Golden Compass was... and all things considered, GC was actually a pretty damn faithful adaptation.

I think when we get a Director's Cut we have a good faithful adaption of the golden compass.

Sequels..we have to see. Honestly for now I would be confident when they just do it. Other things I ca worry about later.
