Songs made ABOUT the trilogy

the Maryland, USA traditional/prog metal band Odin's Court recorded a song called "His Dark Materials", found here http://www.odinscourtband.com/Clips/HisDarkMaterials.mp3

"His Dark Materials"

©2002/2003 Odin's Court
Words & Music: Brookins

Verse 1:
Dark matter flowing in a finite sea.
Chasm of nothing, void to eternity.

The authority deserving praise?
Hollow be thy name, thy kingdom's done,
The subtle knife will raise.

Chorus 1:
It slices through the air,
Cutting through the plane.

Verse 2:
Tempter of the new world's Eve,
bringing knowledge of love and loss.

Lyra, reckless, proud, and true will achieve.
Dæmon and death they are a part of you.

Chorus 2:
Divisions separating worlds
through hence the specters came.
The clouded mountain burning through the sky,
Angels fight and cry in the night.

Solos: Guitar/Bass/Drum/Guitar

Chorus 3:
Amber Spyglass shows us why.
Golden Compass, conflicts of strife.
A war from Heaven to Earth and Parallel Planes,
Win at what cost?

ooh, sounds interesting *downloads*

you might wanna edit the link, there's some problem with the url tag...

*edit*
hmm, not sure what to say, it sounds a little weird, I can't say it sucked, but it wasn't really amazing... it sounded a bit bare, and the lyrics could've been a bit less straight-forward... and I'm not too keen on the singer's voice.
But still, not too shabby :P

Vocalist is trying to sound a bit too epic, and guitar solo is a bit naff.
Apart from that, good song.

Haha. That's hilarious. Not so kean on the singing, but the music itself was ok, as horrible as the lyrics were. 100 billion times better than Harry and the Potters, which is the only other book songs I have ever heard...yes, this is a new genre for me.

Yesyesyes. Exactly my thoughts too. I don't think the vocalist actually trying to be epic though :P

The guitar aren't that bad, but I find the lyrics fairly naff.

Great idea and the guitar was okay but the singer... *shivers* No, I don't like that song.

Like Binni said, the lyrics are much too straight forward I think.

Dunno what it sounds like though.

I'll tell you what it sounds like, it sounds like crap! for some reason I just REALLY didn't like it. And the lyrics!? "Dark matter flowing in a finite sea." I think the meant infinite. and for some reason I just really don't like how this sounds either: "Cutting through the plane"

:flush:

Lyra and the daemons, anyone? HDM could inspire a lot of band's names:

The Intention Craft
Exprimental Theology
Witch Clan
The Authority
The Magesterium
Ci'gazzi
The Cave
Chocolatl
Panserbjorne

God, these sound like bad 70's acts - this is all getting a bit Spinal Tap!

I think that a group named 'Svalbard' would have a ring to it.

That is utterly horrible. I couldn't even manage to get to the chorus before I got the hell off that site.

I heard 4 minutes and decided that the singer was crap, the music was lame, and I couldn't hear any of the lyrics whatsoever.

Then I stopped it.

The guitar timing was awful, the drummer lost the beats an the singer sounded like Jason Schlosburg being grabbed by the balls with a razorblade.
I hope Odins Court had better material, or a better singer

Can we stop bashing the band and for a moment take the time to love anyone who would actually write AND perform a song about His Dark Materials, no matter how horrible you think it is? Personally, I think the song's quite funny, but we are all entitled to our own opinions. Just take into consideration that this is one of the only songs in the world written about the subject of this website.

Agreed veggies, but remember all those prog rock bands that got a bit obsessed with Lord of the Rings
Odin's Court sound a bit like Marillion (..and we all know where that band got their name from)
