Pullman trilogy overtakes Potter

Postby Tristan » Mon Jun 02, 2003 9:29 pm

Yay!! Excellent news, http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story ... 08,00.html and http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainmen ... 955578.stm saying that: "Harry Potter is being displaced in the wallets as well as the hearts of British readers by Philip Pullman's indomitable child heroes Lyra and Will, according to new evidence.
Figures revealed yesterday showed that Pullman's prize-winning His Dark Materials trilogy is outselling any Potter title by more than 25% after years in which JK Rowling has towered over her market." and

"Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy has benefited from its inclusion in the BBC's Big Read by becoming the best-selling book in the survey, according to research.

Its success has seen it edge ahead of any of the Harry Potter books, including the most popular in the series The Prisoner of Azkaban, with sales 25% higher."

::cheers for HDM and PP::

All right!
The bad thing is, it might just be a new-book anticipation slump for HP.

yeah!!! C'mon, His Dark Materials should've outstripped Harry way before this! Although I have a special place in my liver for Harry, Lyra and her band of merry side kicks have the top place for literary characters in my heart. And like I've said before, she could so kick Hermione's ass. And Harry versus Will...? C'mon, now, we wouldn't want to give Harry another scar....

Ya, I think more people are hearing about HDM. I remember when I received "The Golden Compass" several years ago. I must admit, seeing a little girl riding a polar bear, made me think: "What on Earth did my parents buy me?!"...but in the end, I was hooked. Lol, guess I can't help but judge a book by its cover...lol..and title.

But anyways, too bad HDM didn't beat out Potter in the long run. The way the ranking is arranged, the HDM trilogy is grouped into one ranking...while Potter is spread out to four separate rankings which, when totalled, surpass HDM by a whole lot.
But still...we're all glad to see HDM on the board, right?!!? :D

ex:

2 His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman 748,099

3 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by JK Rowling 521,659

4 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling 488,139

5 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling 462,765

6 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by JK Rowling 399,605

Well, it's possible that those sales numbers took that into account. Like, if a book from the trilogy was independently sold, it would be 1/3 of a book according to the chart. Plus, it could be just counting boxed sets which would be even better for HDM.

I was overjoyed to read that in the paper today, i was under the impression that HDM wasnt so popular, go PP. I hear that harry potter 5 has so far taken 50 million pre-orders around the globe though. =|

Buying everyone a copy...that's a good idea, it'll convert the masses too. I think I'll try and use my contact at WHSmith to grab a copy of LO early  How nifty would that be?

I have the paperback books, and a signed 3 in 1 hardback one (for all of you who didn't know already :D)

And I think i'm going to buy a German version it when i'm there(11 days, yey!) .. since my plans of buying HP5 in German were thwarted when i found out they're not translating it until November. ::sighs::
