10m USD in Japanese opening weekend

Animation Magazine reports that The Golden Compass earned $10m in the Japanese box office in its opening weekend. While its domestic release was disappointing, the film continues to perform strongly in overseas markets. Read more.
When do you guys think they will make an official announcement regarding whether or not they will go forward with the sequels? This franchise feels like its got a lot of money-making potential – obviously in the overseas markets, and I hope Warner Bros./Time Warner is smart enough to see that!

The director indicated that performing well in Japan was very important so, I suspect, sometime after that-late spring perhaps.

Apparently this is very good. The BO of sneak previews was 159% better than “Night at the Museum”.
The projected total $50M takes compares with:
“Spirited Away” = $229M
“Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix” = $80M
“Casino Royale” = $19M
“Eragon” = $15M
“Stardust” = $3M
“BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA” = $1.6M
I hope they make enough money and then do the two sequels!
