Movie Posters & Concept Model
The Licensing 2006 International trade show was today and New Line, makers of the His Dark Materials movie adaptations, showcased some of its plans for the upcoming Golden Compass movie. On display was a huge horizontal poster with art of the alethiometer and Lyra upon Iorek's back. The armoured bear was also shown in a large replica model. Click here to view the images. Woah. I love it!
The style is completely different to what I would have thought of (it's alot more fantasy-ish) and I personally hope they go with that aesthetic for the whole movie, although I relaise this is just a poster.
Iorek looks amazing. He's way bigger and fiercer than I had pictured him, and I love what they did with the armour.
This boosts my confidence greatly.

It looks kind of crude, but not enough that you'd think Iorek would make it himself. Although, he is very good with metals, so maybe he made the small decorations himself. Hmmm.

My problem with the design of the armor isn't about what's there but what isn't there… on the model there appears to be little to no armor on his belly, which is a spot that logically needs it. But in the painting I can't tell how far it goes because of the shadow.
Also the legs should have plating that goes lower, or chainmesh or something.
Now overall there are seperate sheets if you look closely enough at the model.
In the painting there does appear to be more armor around the neck… but again there's so much shadow- which I think is intentional at this stage- it's hard to tell where things could end or begin.
The same goes for Lyra. Some of it could be hair, some of it could be hood. And I think that is intentional as they have not yet to have found their Lyra. They don't want to give away a false face to the public. So shrouding her in as much mystery as possible seems key for them.
By the way is there a Lyra model sitting atop the Iorek model?

Does anybody get what's going on with the alethiometer here?
It seems to be that they've split the symbols up into seperate rings, with a long needle on the middle ring and a very short needle on the outside ring, which is visible on the top left by the griffin. The third smallest ring doesn't have a needle visible in this pic, so I can only assume that it is facing the bottom where the picture dissolves.
If this is in fact what is going on with the design, it seems they've added new symbols to the original 36. :wassat:

And about Iorek's armour, so what if they decided to change it a bit? It's still rusty and stuff (from what I can tell) so the comparison between him and Iofur's bears (the only scene in which his armour's design really matters) will be intact.
I think you're over-reacting. Whether or not a character looks exactly the same as they're described in the book is only a petty issue. It's definetley nothing no reason to be against the movie- start saying that if they ruin the plot or something.

I personally think the poster looks pretty good! This is such an early stage of production though that anything could still be changed so no one should get upset if the current concept art doesn't match up to their imagination of the story. Oh, and as for the lack of armour on the belly. If I am mistaken wasn't the belly and neck supposed to be the only vulnerable spots? Overall though I am very pleased with how the poster turned out.

so im gonna say this, particularly to Alewyn, but to everyone who is worried. the real model is obviously when Iorek becomes king again, its majestic, royal, beautiful. if you look at his armour on the poster, its completely different; dirty, rusty, rugged… so just chill out alright? and Iris, i completely agree, dont get your panties all in a bunch if "concept art" is different than your imagination or how the book describes it… its the plot that really counts

lets just hope they dont pull a "how to eat fried worms". the book is COMPLETELY different than this new movie coming out with the same title, but they insist on saying it is based on that! ugh!

i think hoobitz is right, if u look at the top of the picture of the Iorek model it looks like a model of Lyra is sat on top of him! i think the priority should be trying to get hold of a picture of that rather than worry about the look of Ioreks armour and Lyra's hair colour

It's at a trade fair remember, so that's probably just another company in the background who are displaying things there.
As for the alethiometer, I think it's just been repeated back on itself for artistic value.
Good spot on the Lyra model! You can see her in furs on the top. Hopefully we'll get a better shot of the model some time.

I thought I should say I like the title design they have right now. A lot. They took something that could have been boring and did something pretty dynamic with it. It doesn't feel like a Narnia or a LOTR knock off and retains the spirit of the book- if that is possible with a font-
Regarding my Iorek comments- I do understand it is 'concept' art and that things could change. I didn't want to rant.
I assume he will primarily be a CG character, so tweaks could happen till the last minute.

The only thing with tweaking beyond a certain point is that the animators will have set the physics of the character a certain way based on how he moves in the armor and how it shifts with his movments. So a fairly large re-do late in the process might not be very viable, which leads me to believe that this design we see here will be close to the final one we see on screen.
I first thought that there were multiple alethiometers juxtaposed atop/behind eachother, but that needle throws me off. There are obvious differences in the design of each ring's/dial's edge… ugh I'm over thinking this.

With the font, I think they've gone for a circular motif – the giant G and C are evoking the round alethiometer.

And how are they gonna make a good movie out of a fantastic book in just a year?

I'm looking forward to the movie, and ilike this big Iorek, but the armor is like Iofur Rankinson's (golden and elaborated), it should be simple and stained. The name looks good, but the drawingns aren't very clear. The story is soooooooooooooooooo good! I hope they can tranform it well to a movie!!!! :laughing:

Ioreks armour looks rather wrong, its not ment to be shiny and gold at all.

Maybe it isn't Iorek? The armour on the bear on the poster looks different to the armour featured on the model.

And guys, the picture on the poster is concept art, nothing more. Iorek is not going to be that big, and that's not a picture of Lyra's actress. We probably won't be getting real pics till next month.

I agree, eighteen months, if they start NOW, seems short for a film like this. It'd be better like Lord of the Rings, filming all the books at once. That way, we don't need to worry about Ms. D.B. Richards aging too much, either, like has happened with the Harry Potter cast.
