New Line pulls in pic scribe

New Line has hired Hossein Amini (”The Wings of the Dove”) to pen “The Subtle Knife,” the second part of Phillip Pullman's “His Dark Materials.”

Move comes as New Line's in the midst of a five-month shoot on Pullman's “The Golden Compass” at Shepperton Studios in London. Chris Weitz is directing the $150 million “Compass” — to be released late this year — from his own script.

New Line president Toby Emmerich has continued to assert that the mini-major plans to shoot the second and third stories in Pullman's trilogy, but only if the first performs well. But he also said this week that the hiring of Amini represents a significant commitment toward going ahead with the next film.

Amini's currently penning “Drive” for U with Hugh Jackman attached to star and Marc Platt producing. Other credits include “Jude” and “The Four Feathers.”

Brit newcomer Dakota Blue Richards stars in “Compass” as 12-year-old Lyra Belacqua, who travels to a parallel universe to battle the forces of evil and rescue her best friend. Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and Eva Green also star.

In “The Subtle Knife,” Pullman introduces the character of a 12-year-old boy who has learned the art of invisibility and is seeking his missing father when he encounters a vanishing cat and joins forces with Lyra Belacqua.

Pullman's final book in the trilogy, “The Amber Spyglass,” won the U.K.'s 2001 Whitbred Prize for children's book, then became the first kids' book to win the Whitbred book of the year award.

Scholastic Media's Debra Forte is producing “Compass” with line producer Bill Carraro.

WHen and where do ya think the auditions for Will are! Cool that they've already kinda started on 'the Subtle Knife'.

Not the best summary in my opinion. Invisibility should probably have been italicized, but o well. Lets just continue to pray that they don't screw up. lol

Well, I hope they will realase the movies year by year, and we have not to wait so much….

And i also hope that all the caracthers casted in the first have commitment with the triology…If this doesn't happen they will arruine the triology…

Let's have faith
Sorry for my poor english!

Soapy says:

Does this mean Weitz is out? Stoppard commented that Weitz likes to use his own scripts which is why his wasn't used. I can't imagine that would've changed, assuming Stoppard was correct in saying that.

Also, wtf? Where does "not being noticed" get changed into the ability to be "invisible?" Major misrepresentation there.

this is turning into Harry Potter- different directors/writers for each film. i don't like it

i want to see Will!

KDS says:

Very interesting news…Amini, in comparison to Stoppard and even Weitz to some extent, is a much smaller name with a smaller body of work from a commercially-successful standpoint…if one wanted to be cynical, it could be argued that New Line felt it would be easier to assert pressure on Amini if they wanted creative changes made to the script (toning down the religous subtext, etc.) than Weitz or another writer.

Also interesting as regards Soapy's point about Weitz's need to direct his own scripts…hopefully this doesn't lead to a revolving door of directors, God knows the Weitz-Antoine Fuqua-Weitz again debacle was bad enough.

All this of course is based on the assumption that TGC does the business at the box office to justify the sequels being put into production of course

QUOTE: "Also, wtf? Where does "not being noticed" get changed into the ability to be "invisible?" Major misrepresentation there."

Yeah, I couldn't stop laughing when I read that… "Vanishing Cat" is pretty misleading as well.

It seems that all the articles that i've read that give short plots of the books just totally misunderstand them. I read one in a magazine the other day that claimed Lyra had a magical shape-shifting 'PET', which is really missing the point.

November 30, 1999 12:00 am | link

Yeah, but that doesn't mean the people making the movie will make those mistakes xD

apart from that…i cant wait for the subtle knife movie-i think that movie is going to be the longest because there are alot of important parts that you cant miss while in the amber spyglass there are less important parts even though its bigger.

Chrissyboyuk says:

this could be good news that at least they are thinking about the others this early, it could mean they each get the creative attension they deserve!also it may be that a new writer has been found because weitz is too busy with TGC to pen a script at this time. if weitz was to direct and write all three films then he would have to do a speed job at writing the second, if it goes ahead, and that might make it a bit rubbish. So i think its a good thing they are getting writers onto it now. the only thing that worries me is if there is a big gap between finishing TGC and starting TSK because they wait for box office response then wont Dakota get too old to play lyra for all three films? perhaps its just me, but i sort of got the impression reading the books that the story spans about a year in thier lives perhaps a bit more? if they have to wait until each film is released in order to green light the next one its going to be at least three years by the time amber spyglass is finished filming. making dakota about 15. i think i would rather keep dakota (if she's good) and accept she looks a bit old, than have a different actress for every film. same goes for will. what do you all think?

Soapy says:

QUOTE: I read one in a magazine the other day that claimed Lyra had a magical shape-shifting 'PET', which is really missing the point.

God, that sounds awful. I tell you, if all i heard about HDM was from magazines and articles about the film i'd think it was pretty lame. even saying "physical representation of her soul in animal form" sounds a bit doolaly.

Exactly

QUOTE:

I was thinking about it too, but i don't think they'll change Dakota,
they can make a person look older or younger, I mean… :)

They surely though about it already, it's something they've should know for the first moment!

November 30, 1999 12:00 am | link

Well, this sounds like good news to me. It means that New Line likes what they've seen of TGC so far that they're confident it'll do well.

November 30, 1999 12:00 am | link

Tim says:

My hope is that if The Golden Compass is a success, then The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass will be filmed at the same, and then be released a year apart, like Back to the Future 2 & 3, or more recently, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 &3. I think this would make the most sense, as it would keep the actors from getting too old, plus it keeps the release dates closer together, and therefore more in the public consciousness. Plus, if the first film is a success, it should be assumed that the next two films will be successful as well (as long as the quality of the sequels is consistent with the first film), so there should be no reason to wait to see if The Subtle Knife performs well to begin The Amber Spyglass.

Kaneda says:

Why would they pick Amini for this project? He has done practically nothing! I hope they didnt just pick a no-name so Newline could make him their b****.

If Weitz is good with GCM, he can still do Subtle Knife. ALthough i fel that Alfonso Cuaron ("Children of Men" and "Harry Potter 3") would be perfect.

i wouldn't like Alfonso Cuaron or any director who has work in HP to work with HDM…

aklebury: I read one in a magazine the other day that claimed Lyra had a magical shape-shifting 'PET', which is really missing the point.

… Pet? Pet?! Did Mrs. Coulter write that? (TGC, Chapter 17, a few pages in). I know that was just some reporter, but I have to say, I hope they don't mess with the human-dӕmon relationship. That would ruin everything. I'm afraid they might change important parts of the story just to make it "easier" to understand.

November 30, 1999 12:00 am | link

Vaka says:

I think the "pet" and "invisibility" descriptions are due to bad summaries, not a lack of understanding among the filmmakers.

And yeah, I'm also getting excited by the attention the movie is starting to recieve. Last time I checked, TGC was the most visited preview at Yahoo's upcoming movie database, beating movies like Harry Potter, Transformers, The Simpsons Movie, etc.

He isnt a director, hes a writer. yes, they could have picked him because they believe he is talented, but that is optimism.

And do you mean by "I wouldnt like… any Director who has work in HP to work with HDM"?

So now your giving Cuaron a stigma merely because he worked on the HP series regardless of his directing qualities?
At least we know he possesses talent, unlike noname Amini.

Any one that thinks that Hossein Amini has no talent is a fool. He has written for Shekhar Kapur, and produced scripts that have attracted the likes of Heath Ledger, Djimon Hounsou, Chris Eccleston, Michael Gambon. Not having a big name isnt unusual for a script writer. Look at Steven Kloves, as an example

November 30, 1999 12:00 am | link

Im not saying he doesnt have talent, im saying there is a good possibility that he'll make a craperific script.

If and when the auditions for will in the Subtle Knife you all know, directed at auditioners, there will probably be an age limit. for lyra it was for between 9 and 13 and Will is the same age as lyra so the age limit will be similar. say maybe 10-14 or 11-15 because boys at 9 won’t be the same size as boys at 12

just letting you know

AGG (actor) says:

I would really like to play the part of Will in The Subtle Knife film because I have been acting in school plays and other minor things since I was about 8 and it would be a dream come true if I was cast as Will. I will definnitely be going to the auditions if they have any. I have read all of the books and now I’m reading The Subtle Knife for the 3rd time and every time it gets better. I’m 13, but by the time of the auditios I will be 14 so that would make me the same age as the actress that plays Lyra. I would love to work with all of the great actors and actresses that have parts in the movies because they are truely the people that I look up to.

Nieko says:

Hey Everyone….

Of course im writing to say that i really want to audition for the part as Will Parry lol.

The description that is given of him does match me, but there are 2 floors…..
1) im 15 years old which is higher than the recomendation that was given for the Lyra auditions.
2) I have slightly tanned skin
Anyone know whether this may or may not stop my chances?

…. Lol its funny when ppl put things like……
“Quote:” i’m good lookin *wink to girls*
I think its the casting directors that will decide taht lol.

Of course i would love to get the part, but i’ll go for a laugh and see what happens! :D
Good luck everyone

Blakeo says:

I wanna be Will Parry so bad that if I don’t get the part I am probably going to pea my pants. I am 10 years old, but my dad is a director and make movies. Not exactly big movies like The Golden Compass but it made me an actor so that a lot of adults watch his podcasts so everyone who watches it will know me. And a lot of people comment saying they love my brother, sister and me! I really want to know when and where the auditions are being held so I can get the part. My dads website is izzyvideo.com so you can see what we do.

lmaoo Nieko! the casting directors will decide alright! i checked out that thing on that TGC (the golden compass by the way ewan) and it said my daemon was a snow leopard called Vyena. it said i was : assertive, solitary, shy, proud and fickle. cool or what.
making out with lyra aint bad i have to say… but its getting famous and making out with even more girls that im getting hyped about!!!
also blakeo, cool how did u do that ae thing on daemons. Idint think that the movie was worse that the book, but movies r usually nevva better. cuz of the running time n all that (i though te ending sucked, i wanted roger to die!) =[

January 25, 2008 1:56 am | link

the age for will tehy will accept is from 10 to 12, and teh auditions are before your 13th birthday, so I should assume so, no news from the auditions yet, good luck to everyone! :)

good luck to you to mate i just gotta hope it’s before my 13th

January 26, 2008 1:46 am | link

Arkarus says:

oh yeah, btw, the ages aint for 10-12, they are gonna be for 11-13 probably, because, its not age that counts now, its just u have to be at least 11, as you have to kiss, and also, u have to be the same age as Lyra, so… all 10yr olds, sorry.

P.S, post as soon as the audition info is out, oh yeah, and im 12, 13 in may 21, GOOD LUCK

January 26, 2008 2:18 am | link

Ramz says:

I think appearence won’t be important I men lyra in the movie is totally diffrent than Lyra in the book.

January 27, 2008 4:59 am | link

Tom says:

I reckon they’re gonna cut out the kissing bit, cuz it is an adult book, and they’ve alterted so much, cuz they wanted it to be for more younger people as well. and it is 10-12 year olds, I’ve checked, can’t be 13, can’t be 9, I’m sure of it, I checked.

January 28, 2008 5:32 pm | link

Ramsey lawrence says:

Where did you find out do you have any more information on the audition Tom

January 28, 2008 8:54 pm | link

Tom says:

Not really. People say they will be around march, and I can’t really say that that isn’t true, since almost no one knows, but if you tell me what you know about the auditions, I’ll tell you what I know. I just can’t wait for those auditions! Anyway, I found out on the internet, looked it up, and it was going on about it, and how the auditions had to be 10-12, but I think it’s a bit strange havinh all these 10 year olds wanting to audition…

January 29, 2008 5:37 pm | link

Ramsey Lawrence says:

I think 10 year olds won’t be invited because Will is supposed to be tall and 10 year olds are way too short it will probably go one year over and under wills age 12 I agree with Arkarus

January 30, 2008 1:46 am | link

Tom says:

Maybe, I don’t know…

January 30, 2008 5:36 pm | link

Tom says:

I’m not saying I’m definate, I’m just saying I can’t say it’s not true, but it IS pretty weird having all these 10 year olds wanting to be Will, I was just reading other comments, and this boy wants to be Will who is 9!!! lol!

1stly i think if ur gonna work out, do it for self pleasure and not to write posts about it, and u rly think 50 press ups and sit ups a day will make any diff? …. Seriously guys, there is no point doing weights or anything to buuff up untill you are at a later stage in adolescence, u will not buff up, u will damage ur bones, but if u just wanna do it to tone up a bit, thts cool.

As for spots, all u need to do is drink lots of water, get a good nights sleep, and u cant help them through teenage years…….

Conor says:

I think i speak for everyone when i say everyone want’s to be will.

WELL STOP WORRYING!!!

this is to all those people wh say that 13 is to old… GET THE FUCK. i was born on september 1994… (wich means i’m 13) and dakota blue richards (LRYA) was bon on april 1994 wich means she is 5 MONTHS OLDER THAN ME!!! so stop worring.. its likely she gna be 15 before the next one is out.

and remember BE YOUR SELF. i mean think about, you can look exactly like will… and not get the part they dont want a person who looks like will in every shape form or way, but cant bloody act.

you can be skinny, fat, small, tall… or 50 and get the part as long as you can act and feel like will.

well… except for the 50 year old guy.

and you can be the greatest will parry ever… except for the 50 year old guy.

and you can be the best child actor ever… except for the fiftey year old guy…

JUST FORGET ABOUT THE 50 YEAR OLD GUY.

just be yourself… “i’m not talking to you 50 year old guy… what is your real name by the way?”… “Oh bob.”

February 1, 2008 5:51 pm | link

Arkarus says:

no body know about the time and date of the auditions?, oh, and you guys that are saying that u wanna be all Buff and Fit for the auditions, i wouldnt bother, the the description of will at the begining is basically that hes not that strong, but that he gets stronger and more heroic as he gets the knife, and i was on the net, and some dude was saying that the age limit is 11-13, possibly 14, if u look young, so dont worry. good luck, and post dates ASAP.

February 2, 2008 1:26 am | link

Tom says:

The dates haven’t come, but, man, how I’m nervous!
Couldn’t they do the auditions earlier… like… now? I don’t wanna be buff, besides, I don’t know ANYONE who can get buff in a month or 2. I’m doing just some exercise, because I AM a bit chubby, and I think I need to get rid of it. Anyway! Good luck to all!… Again!… why do I keep on saying that? Right, Good luck to everyone, and I’m saying that in every comment, cuz I can’t put it in every comment, it gets a little boring. lol!

these are offical questions and answers from chris witzs (spelling) from mtv blogs…. hope this helps…LEAVE ME ALONE 50 YEAR OLD MAN.. obob sorry… STILL IM NOT GOING TO SNUGGLE YOU INTO THE AUDITIONS FOR WILL

QUESTION #4 (from Seb):
Provided “The Subtle Knife” is adapted into film, will open auditions be held for the character Will Parry, as they were for Lyra? Or would you cast Will by other means?

ANSWER:
I don’t know exactly how we’ll go about finding Will. It’s rare for lightning to strike twice, but open calls may just be the way to do it. At the same time, I wouldn’t want to rule out any known young actor just on principle. The thing is not to get caught up in the idea of what Will “looks” like; it’s far more important that he “feels” like the character, and furthermore that he is able to convey, in a subtle way, the very difficult and challenging experiences that Will has gone through before we catch up with him in “The Subtle Knife” – experiences that make him both Lyra’s opposite and her match

February 5, 2008 10:55 pm | link

Arkarus says:

“I don’t know exactly how we’ll go about finding Will”

your a director or special influence in the choice of will, i think not…
anybody know what happens in Auditions, like what the girls had to do for Lyra, i gotta practise.

to-old-to-be-Will says:

I think that i would be the perfect Will, i´m a good actor, i´m tall, i kinda got the right voice and i´ve read all the books more than once, but the problem is that i´m 14 years old, so i´m be older than Will, and I live in Iceland(N-europe), so it isn´t a short trip to the studio.

(pardon my english)

February 6, 2008 3:00 am | link

Conor says:

Arkarus i heard somewhere that they just made them act from the script and asked them questions like.. “why should you be lyra” and that kinda stuff… it kinda makes sense… because you dont go to a movie audition and the directer makes you do the hokey pokey lol.

oh and “to-old-to-be-will” your gona have a lot of competetion i can asure you on that… but good luck tho… ill look forward to seeing you there=]

February 6, 2008 4:47 am | link

Tom says:

to-old-to-be-will, I think you have to be an uk person, so I don’t think you can enter, it was like that for the lyra auditions, but it might be different for will…

February 6, 2008 1:14 pm | link

Ramsey Lawrence says:

I think Will hasnt got a strong English voice and his accent is not shown in the books so i think it will be different than the lyra auditions.

Tom Breedveld says:

Same for me, I would love to play Will, but a) I’m from Holand, although my English is good, and b) I’ve never acted before. But I’m not saying I can’t act, I love it. I’m also 13, male and I’ve read all the books. Still, fat chance. It’s not forbidden to hope.
