Javno reports that to mark the release of The Golden Compass movie in Japan, Japanese jeweller Tanaka Kikinzoku has unveiled an 18 carat gold alethiometer which his firm has developed at a cost of $280,000 US.
The compass measures 8.3cm in diametre, weighs 900gms and is based on the design of the alethiometer used in the film.
It has taken seven craftsmen about a year to make the model and it is intended that the alethiometer be displayed at the upcoming Japanese premiere. Unfortunately, there are no plans to sell the model.
You can read the story in full here.

Monica Edinger reveals in her blog educating alice more inconsistencies between the cinematic release of The Golden Compass and the merchandise which accompanied it. Like the video game, the official movie quiz book includes content (i.e. plot details) from the last three chapters of the story, or the final section of the film displaced just before release. This indicates how last minute these edits and changes were, considering how accompanying materials were already well into production. Questions include, “What does Asriel do to Roger’s daemon?” Read more.
The Golden Compass movie had its ending controversially cut and little is known about what we might have seen other than what we have seen in the trailers and teasers released. However, The Golden Compass video game contains clips from the movie, including the moment when Lyra arrives at Lord Asriel’s laboratory on Svalbard with Roger in tow. You can watch the clip here, or just below.
Bridgetothestars recently got their hands on a copy of the official The Golden Compass board game, made by Sophisticated Games, and Ian Giles and a couple of other willing volunteers offered to try it out. Find out what they thought in Ian’s review which you can read here.

New York specialty toy retailer FAO Schwarz are producing a range of items for The Golden Compass movie. Here’s what they have to say on the line-up, with images below:
“We worked closely with New Line Cinemas to recreate the daemon characters as well as Iorek the Ice Bear in fine plush. These special renderings are available only through FAO Schwarz.
We’re also thrilled to present the artistry of our friend, Robert Tonner, in his creation of figures inspired by the film. Robert has applied his considerable skills to creating special facial sculpts for Mrs. Coulter, Lord Asriel, and Lyra, as portrayed by the actors. Just as the actors breathe life into the characters on screen, so too does Robert Tonner in these beautiful creations that capture their unique personalities.”
Variety has posted an article on the marketing side of New Line’s upcoming adaptation of the Golden Compass. $50 million has been committed to marketing via blue chip brands alone, not to mention merchandise contracts. The studio estimates that these promotion efforts, which exceed those for Lord of the Rings, will be worth $120 million. ‘”It’s definitely the most important property we’ve had since ‘Lord of the Rings,’” said Rolf Mittweg, New Line’s proxy and chief operating officer of worldwide distribution and marketing.’ Expect to see these branded items outside America and the United Kingdom as well. Branded Coke cups will be seen worldwide, and Toyota will launch its Noah minivan under the name in Japan. Read more.

The Noble Collection list two such items: a replica alethiometer and a replica of the mechanical spyfly Mrs Coulter sets on Lyra. Both aren’t due for release until 2008, however, and weigh in at a hefty $195.00 each.
