BridgetotheStars have seen and read the new Philip Pullman book. Here’s our review:
The latest ’His Dark Materials’ related instalment from Philip Pullman is an absolute triumph.
It seems that ‘Once Upon A Time In The North’ is not destined for the same fate as ’Lyra’s Oxford’. Initial hopes about that book had been high but restrained; for all its strengths, however, it was seen by many as a disappointment. ‘Once Upon A Time In The North’ is by comparison quite the converse.
Pullman has arguably produced some of his best writing… - Read more -

Amanda Craig from The Times has reviewed the newest installment in His Dark Materials describing it as a joy to be reunited with Pullman’s beloved characters after a less than satisfactory experience with the truncated film release this past season. “It is exuberant, intelligent fun, in a way that his previous novella, Lyra’s Oxford, was not, and the exquisite engravings by John Lawrence and small size of the book make it a joy to look at, touch and hold.” Read more.

Following Sue Arnold’s highly positive recommendation of the unabridged Philip Pullman-narrated Northern Lights audiobook in Saturday’s Guardian newspaper, the Bookwitch features a blog with her thoughts on the audiobooks. Something both critics seem to be fans of is the voice actor Sean Barratt, cast as Iorek Brynison and Lord Asriel in the readings. You can also take part in discussions about the audiobooks over in our dedicated area of the forum by clicking here.

This evening’s episode of Front Row on BBC Radio 4 reviewed The Golden Compass movie, and on the whole was very positive. The reviewers, A.N Wilson and Mark Lawson discussed a number of issues during the piece, including the reaction to the film by Christian groups in the United States, which they dismissed very much in the same manner Philip Pullman himself did in a piece he wrote in the Sunday Times over the weekend. Amongst other things discussed were also the pronunciation of Lord Asriel’s name and the foundations of Iorek Brynison’s character (which were likened to a product of writer Joseph Conrad by reviewer A.N. Wilson). You can listen to the full programme here. Alternatively, you can download the item regarding The Golden Compass movie here.

The Guardian Books Blog currently has a blog by Ann Giles entitled How a trilogy became a library, discussing how the multitude of guide books to His Dark Materials differ and which books suit whom best. The comments afterwards contain some interesting points, including input from writers Laurie Frost and George Beahm. You can read the blog in full here.

There’s a brief review of the Butterfly Soup fundraiser held by Oxford youth theatre Pegasus (of which Philip Pullman is a patron) last weekend on the BBC website. Amongst other things, it selects as a highlight Philip Pullman’s use of a Texan accent. You can read more here. More is to follow soon from our bridgetothestars report on the evening.
