Philip Pullman writes that one of the chapters from Northern Lights, ‘A Outrance’ (’Mortal Combat’ in US editions) has been released as an illustrated letterpress book by small publisher Oaktree Fine Press. This is the chapter in which Iorek Byrnison fights Iofur Raknisson for kingship of the armoured bears.

ScrollMotion, a mobile phone application developer company, has reached a deal with major publishers to allow it to deliver e-books to your iPhone. As random house were one of the publishers involved in the deal, the His Dark Materials trilogy will be available for download. Each book downloaded is saved on the phone as a separate application and will keep the same page numbering as the original book, while still allowing the user easy navigation with zooming and scrolling. The ever info-full Chris sends over these new UK book covers for the three His Dark Materials novels, designed to tie in with the movie of The Golden Compass out this winter. The first book of the His Dark Materials trilogy, Northern Lights, has been awarded the ‘great book’ title - the best children’s book from the last 70 years of Carnegie medal winners. You can read more here.

Playthings' report on the New York Toy Fair (see below) also has a few words with Leslye Schaefer, senior vice president of marketing and consumer products for Scholastic Media - the publishers of His Dark Materials. Along with the release of the movie will come several tie-in books from Scholastic - including movie-themed artwork as covers, plus games and puzzles from Mega Brands and Sababa Toys. “It's a really nice marriage and it's been really interesting for us,” Schaefer says. “We're launching a huge campaign.”
