In-depth Interview with Chris Weitz
Posted by Ian on December 9, 2007 at 2:35 am
Canadian website Movies Online feature a recent interview with The Golden Compass director Chris Weitz from the movie’s Los Angeles press day. It’s one of the more in depth interviews done with Weitz recently. Items discussed are the much talked-about potential director’s cut which we may see on the DVD release.

Weitz says he believes there is potential for a revised 2 hours 30 minutes running time, even without adding on the missing ending. The director also discusses the importance of star names being cast for minor roles, the sequels and his future career. It’s a really interesting piece - you can read the interview in full here.

I wonder when we’ll know if they’re going to go ahead with the second movie. I’m hoping they will, but I read several articles stating that box office numbers were lower than expected for the first day. :\

I am REALLY upset guys! Did you hear about the North American box office numbers this weekend? The Golden Compass only made around 25 million dollars! Websites around the internet are calling it a ‘bomb’, ‘disaster’ and a huge ‘disappointment’ for New Line. Does this guarantee that the sequels will never be made? If so, that would be the saddest thing in the world. What are your opinions? I think a lot of us were hoping that the movie would succeed so we could see all 3 feature films come to fruition. Do you think there is ANY chance that they will go ahead with the Subtle Knife? :( This sucks…

Phil says:

Yeah, when I went the theatre was probably less than half full. It is quite sad, because like the books, this is really only one third of a much larger movie and there’s so much more to explore. I hope the worldwide box office numbers make the difference.

Anyway, great interview. Chris Weitz is amazing at explaining his reasons for having things happen they way they did in the film. Also looking forward to that director’s cut. Almost 40 minutes longer than the theatrical cut. That’s a lot of stuff we missed out on.

I think it’s sad but I also think New Line deserves it.

It’s just sad, the books deserved a better studio.
