About those blokes in Trollesund speaking Icelandic: Does Pullman actually give a clear indication of where Trollesund is? (I haven't read the first book in... ages). To my mind, Trollesund is very much a hole in the middle of the arctic, and so Icelandic would be more fitting than one of the Scandinavian languages spoken further south.
