Jordan College & Trollesund Scenes
Posted by Will on November 22, 2007 at 4:04 am
Another two clips from The Golden Compass has been released to the web. Bits and pieces of both scenes have been seen previously, but here’s a full minute or so of video each from the scene where Mrs Coulter approaches the high table at Jordan College and a scene with Iorek Byrnison at Trollesund.

Nice scene! I just love the scowl on Lyra’s face as the Master is reprimanding her.

Nice. I think it’ll be hard to really get into it until the full film, though. Can’t wait for Dec.!

Amy T. - I’m the other Amy from before. I’ll comment as Amy K from now on! :)

These are pretty much perfect. Daemons look very nice.

Aww, man, those were good clips, I can’t really fault them on any major points and I feel silly reiterating this point but Nonso Anozie was SO much than Ian McKellan! That ‘I have a contract with the child’ was the only real line I remember Anozie delivering, and it was perfect. McKellan has too much cadence in his voice. It such a niggling thing but it is the one that bothers me the most out of all the changes.

I don’t care what people say: Dakota IS Lyra!

Jamie Sutherland says:

It may seem like a small and trivial thing but the one thing that I really love about the Iorek/Lee clip is the soldiers speaking Russian. This is how I imagined it when I read it and it shows they won’t be insulting the audience’s intelligence too much. I love that.

I agree with mockingbird about Nonso/McKellen. I hope they release a director’s cut with Nonso’s voice as he was perfect. It’s such a shame.

Other than that, these clips were perfect.

advo says:

I disagree, I think Ian McKellen sounds great as Iorek. Besides, we only ever heard Nonzo say two lines or so, that’s a bit hard to judge if he would have been that perfect. Ian sounds much more regal which suits Iorek, he was after all king. Nonzo sounded younger and that’s pretty much it.

Loving Nicole. She’s absolutely perfect! And I’m definitely also liking Dakota more and more,

Debbie says:

Again I’m disappointed in McKellen’s voice, but these clips are really good on the whole. The more I see of Dakota the more impressed I am with her, she seems to have loots of little mannerisms that a lot of child actors can’t seem to show on screen, it makes her portrayal as Lyra more three dimensional, she looks surprisingly settled in front of the camera as well. Nicole looks amazing, beautiful and charming but there is something underneath that, a power and magnetism about her that makes me think she’s going to be a great Mrs Coulter. I love how they portray her control over the scholars and master of Jordan.

I can’t wait to see it.

Elvine says:

Jamie Sutherland: Are you sure that is Russian? It’s barely audible, but it sounded Icelandic to me. I would have liked if they spoke Swedish though, since Trollesund is on the west coast of “our” Sweden. Also, many of the names of the people of the north sound very Swedish/Norweigan.

Why are they torturing us with these awesome clips? They just make me want to see the movie more and more and we still have to wait like two weeks!

November 22, 2007 9:42 pm | link

Jamie Sutherland says:

No I wasn’t sure it was Russian - I was just guessing. Either way, it was awesome!

Amy G. says:

I have to disagree about Ian McKellen. I think he’s perfect! His voice is naturally deep and gruff, and I love the filters they put on it to make it sound like the voice has to pass a lot of throat before making it to our ears. I felt that Nonzo was forcing his voice to sound “bear-like”, and it seemed unnatural.

It’s difficult because the character is CG, so they’re already a little cold. Using a warm voice with lots of texture like Ian’s was a good call, I think, to balance it out a little.

I guess this is a personal taste. I’m sure that whoever it would’ve been, though, it would’ve been great. I trust the production crew.

Tina says:

Oh the clips are great!

I’m praying for the other two movies to be realized, then 1 hour and 53 minutes would be alright but if they are only making one then I consider it a bit too short because it is going to be so awesome that four hours wouldn’t be too long and before notice it is over,so hopefully they make all three movies!!

November 23, 2007 1:16 am | link

Mockingbird says:

I trust the production crew as well, Amy. I don’t trust New Line executives in their mad frenzy to save the studio by way of this movie. It was a studio decision to replace Anozie.

The Trollesund definitely speak Icelandic. But I have to agree with Elvine, Norwegian or Swedish would have been more fitting. One reason being the name of the place.

Great… I really can’t wait till the film finally comes out… Which for me is only on the *26th*. Damn but New Zealand is such a backwater.

About those blokes in Trollesund speaking Icelandic: Does Pullman actually give a clear indication of where Trollesund is? (I haven’t read the first book in… ages). To my mind, Trollesund is very much a hole in the middle of the arctic, and so Icelandic would be more fitting than one of the Scandinavian languages spoken further south. Not that I personally could tell the difference…
