Posted by jessia on November 2, 2007 at 6:43 pm
Scholastic is releasing a number of movie tie-in books this season, including the Official Illustrated Movie Companion, The World of the Golden Compass, a Movie Poster Book, the Official Movie Quiz Book, and aimed at younger readers, the Movie Storybook and the Story of the Movie, abridged versions of the Golden Compass including stills from the film. These are now available in stores and online. Keep an eye here for further companion releases in the coming months.

These books bug me a bit.. Just because they are books about a movie based off a book. They aren’t really using info from the books but just info from the movies, which is a tiny bit different than whats in the books. Parents should buy their children the actual book instead of these “tie-in” books.

indeed, i quite disagree with the abridging of a wonderfully *accessible* story. the storybook versions were marketed for ages 7+ and 9+ respectively. i probably read TGC at 10 y.o. and it went fine and i’m sure younger readers could handle it as well.

a poster book and a companion book are okay and seem to come with many-a big budget features, but the efforts spent on quiz books could be better spent on things like teaching guides.

i saw these at the bookshop today! i was in a hurry so i didn’t read much. the most interesting thing i saw is probably the detailed scale drawings of bolvanger and the gyptian boat.

hopefully i’ll go to the bookshop again next week and tell you guys a bit more…

COOL! I agree with the opinion that they should have the unabridged book with pictures of scenes from the movie next to the part of the book the scene is in. BUT the poster book looks REALLY COOL!!!

And the golden monkey has demon eyes in the 2nd cover.
