New Short Story with Lee and Iorek
Posted by on September 2, 2007 at 11:19 pm
French community member Cittagazze have a lengthy interview with Philip Pullman which covers a wide range of subjects. On the movie, Pullman reaffirms his admiration for the cast and design; talks a little about his favourite books as a child and an adult; music, and love.

Questions about Pullman’s plans for new His Dark Materials’ books reveal that the author has just finished a short book, due to be out this spring in the UK. Named Once Upon a Time in the North, the book will focus on Lee Scoresby and Iorek Byrnison, in the pair’s younger days - says Pullman, “When we see them for the first time with Lyra, Lee is not that old: he’s fifty, sixty, something like that, so they’ve [he and Iorek] known each other for a long time. But I wanted to write a story when they first met as they were young, and I’ve just written it.”

Like Lyra’s Oxford, the book will again features some “extra-bits” - Pullman says he has been working on a “game-board” to come with it. The Book of Dust appears to still be on the cards for a later release, with Pullman pondering including more stories about Will.

Read the interview.

Wow! Lee and Iorek have always been some of my favorites…and I was always curious what shennanegans went on in the Tunguska Campaign. I’m excited for this…definitely.

Interesting. A little annoyed that he uses the ‘f’ word, but there we go! :-)

And his description of what he has seen of the film seems good, if a little aprehensive!!

Witch-girl says:

Oh, snap! :D

I probably won’t read it, I’m very sorry to say. :( But I’m excited that it’s going to be out next spring in the UK, anyhow. :)

This is quite a lot of new information at once, isn’t it?
I will definitely be buying it, but I do hope that it’s a bit longer than Lyra’s Oxford.
Also, hopefully this means that The Book of Dust will be a properly long book (200-300 pages or more), because it seems to me that the only reason he’d publish this separately is if this story would make it too long.

Good stuff! The interview was a bit more loose then some of the other recent ones and I liked that. Excellent news about the Iorek and Lee story. Not surprised but happy to have something new from PP.

It should be mentioned that this interview is translated from French, and not very well… so watch out for that.

Ardanawen says:

Lyra’s Oxford was beutiful, but waaaaay too sshort and empty; although i loved the extra contents and ilustrations.
I’m looking forward for what’s going to have this new book, and it’s a story we didn’t knew and it will be great to know the younger Lee and his first meeting with Iorek!
But above everything, I’m looking forward for Book of Dust, and this seems like good news:More Will, perhaps?
This new little book just will make our waiting a bit more beareable!

i knew he was considering telling the stories of Iorek/Lee, Asriel/Coulter and Fader Coram/Serafina,
but i didnt realise he was going to do them all like “Lyra’s Oxford”!!
i thought he was going to put them in “the Book of Dust”

AHHHH!! im so exited!!
and he’s also thinking about writing more of Will, my favourite character!!
YEAH!! oh god, im so exited right now!!

New Philip Pullman Book! at Exposay says:

[…] BridgeToTheStars.Net reports that the awesome author, Philip Pullman, is writing another book related to the His Dark Materials series. His Dark Materials is amazing, and happens to be my favorite set of books. But I wanted to write a story when they first met as they were young, and I’ve just written it. […]
