Replica Alethiometers on sale 2008
Posted by Will on November 6, 2007 at 7:00 pm
Asides from the plastic which dominates most of the merchandise for The Golden Compass movie, some higher-end replicas of props from the film are being produced. The Noble Collection list two such items: a replica alethiometer and a replica of the mechanical spyfly Mrs Coulter sets on Lyra. Both aren’t due for release until 2008, however, and weigh in at a hefty $195.00 each.

Thanks to Sephalyn.

Oh. My. God. I need one! That’s pretty expensive, though. I guess I’ll have to start saving my money now for one! This is so cool!

pineapple says:

I’m getting one, no question. Does it work? Do the knobs spin and the needles move and then the answer needle moves???? OMG IM SO EXCITED.

November 7, 2007 9:52 am | link

Annabel says:

It would be good if it had a needle that swung at random… or not so random!… like a real aleithiometer.

We are geeks but we have to have them… xD

November 7, 2007 8:08 pm | link

Sam says:

This is made of awesome. Props to Annabel, I’ll probably be doing the same thing. (And happy birthday. =P)

If only the dials and needle work… oh, I hope they do–they should, considering it’s an “authentic replica”, and the movie would look rather silly with a static alethiometer.

Ahh! I’m excited now.

Rannoch says:

I like it but ehres a few suggestions:

Cover the needles with glass so they won’t bend, but can still move. It would be a little cheap if they did’nt…

Sell it with a nice case, or a very nice soft fabric bag.

Also if a thin gold chain were attatched to it, it would really add to the overall effect. If it’s just the alethiometer I would feel like somethings missing. It’s great yes, but… the above mentioned would really make me buy it without hesitation.

Selkie says:

I have to say I am extremely disappointed at the price.
I am a university student, so I know that I will be unable to buy this. 100-120 dollars? Maybe. This was the only thing that I was going to ask for for Christmas, but it is still too much. It is too frivilous, no matter how much I would absolutely love one.

This is the first time that I feel that they are snubbing their main fan base of average citizens. This is a luxury only reserved for the few.

Urgh.

November 12, 2007 8:55 am | link

Selkie says:

EDIT:

Haha, I actually just emailed the company with a strong worded letter asking them why.
I have NEVER done this for ANYTHING.
(Although I know someone who wrote to Kinder Surprise asking why they didn’t put more smurfs in their eggs.)

Can you tell I am trying to procratinate from studying?

November 12, 2007 9:04 am | link

Ashley says:

OMG!!! MUST HAVE! I don’t care about the price! We’re nerds, but no one cares. :) Fantasy rules all. I could buy it myself, but I think i’ll lay it on my parents. You can actually buy those on eBay, but for… ick… 350 bucks.

It really does seem like a luxery for the few.

Zoe says:

OH.MY.GOD. I absolutely HAVE to have one of these. I was going to pay someone to make a replica for me but these ones look so much better! *Starts saving*

Ben says:

I hv seen movie is wicked to buy replica is lowest for proper replica not toy about £80 or $160 its so cool and i hv not read boks but going to stright away

December 7, 2007 1:52 am | link

Sam Gorman says:

if it doesn’t work, and it probably won’t, i’m not getting it

but i neeeeeeeeeeeed an alethiometer!

and just to show i care, i’d find a way for lyra and will to get back together

it’s so sad *sniff* ;(

December 8, 2007 9:46 am | link

Skye says:

Uhm, you’re joking, right Sam?
They need Dust to work.
Which is fictional.

December 9, 2007 1:20 am | link

Izz says:

If its not that real im not gonna buy it, i mean why dont they just make it into a watch or something useful?

January 3, 2008 7:04 am | link

Lyra says:

I believe in dust. i also beleive in daemons. you can think i’m crazy, that’s great for you. i dont find it fictional. it totally makes sense that they would exist if you really think about it. Just because you can’t see it or touch it doesn’t make it fictional. I also beleive that an alethiometer could work, so i’m gona get it so i’ll just start saving now. (=

January 17, 2008 8:28 pm | link

Lyra says:

oh i also have the toy one, and the only problem with it is the needle, but it still works some times but takes practice.

also no, it shouldn’t be a pocketwatch, that would be pointless…

January 17, 2008 8:30 pm | link

Amy says:

i SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO want it!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

January 22, 2008 8:37 pm | link

Brooke says:

It looks amazing but if u lowered the price a bit then i would totally buy it and another question does it actually work cause i actual seriously need one.

February 26, 2008 1:16 am | link

Lyra says:

ok i got the money, but where do you buy it?

March 17, 2008 10:39 pm | link

Jason says:

I think these can be work — without dust.

The answer, rather like the answer in a tarot deck, is a focus of the sub-conscious.

All that needs to happen is for the answer needle to move “randomly”. Of course, there is no such thing as randomness.

If it doesn’t work, I’ll get it to work :P
