Subtle Knife movie uncertainty continues
Posted by krebbe on July 19, 2008 at 11:59 pm
Philip Pullman cast fresh doubt on the big screen future of the trilogy, revealing he has yet to receive any contact regarding filming for The Subtle Knife. Talking to The Independent, he explained:
“I know everyone would like to see a sequel and I know I’d like to see it. When the first film was in production, I was talking to the studio and to Chris Weitz and producers quite frequently. I’m sure I would be now if the sequel was in production.”
Director Chris Weitz declined to comment, stating he did not want to talk about the project while the studio responsible for the first film was refusing to discuss the future of the trilogy.

In a separate interview with The Telegraph Mr Pullman lamented the role of religious protesters on the U.S. box office figures. Although he thought the attacks were misdirected, he had “no doubt to say it did influence a number of people not to go to see it.” In spite of this, he played down fears that the sequels had been scrapped, insisting it was quite normal for potential films to remain in limbo for some time before a final decision is made. He remains “hopeful” that the sequels will be made.

Michael Gubbins, the editor of Screen International, said it was unlikely that the film could be brought out by next year, especially in a tough box office environment with “trilogy congestion” in following months, but that the franchise was likely to be revisited in the future.

The full stories can be read at The Telegraph and The Independent.

Update (5 Aug 2008): After speaking to the producers, Mr Pullman has revealed the film’s recent developments to the Oxford Mail:
“They are getting a script together and they have plans to get things going - in time all things are possible and I feel quite positive about it.”

I just watched Golden Compass for the second time. The first time was all wrapped around the book in my head. This second viewing saw the movie for the movie - and was I ever pleased. What an excellent adaptation. I truly hope they launch the Subtle Knife.

” i agree wi anita !! well ive jus left school (uni in october) and i wud SO DO A BETTER JOB OF DIRECTING THAN CHRIS WEITZ”

You would (wud) ? LOL or not, you’re obviously in need of more than university. You have to finish grade 3 before university you know.

You could do better ? Right, you have all the experience it takes to pull off a multimillion dollar movie. That is evident up front. Well, best of luck with that. And uni.

Getting a script together, hun? Allright, so Hossein Aimini’s script isn’t just locked in the drawer, maybe they’re analysing and adjusting it, since it was written while TGC was in production, and before the latest modifications of the ending.

Now, where’s Chris Weitz? I want the director’s godmamn cut.

There’s gonna be an extended edition of the movie, as announced on this website some months ago.

Buzz says:

adjusting the script is the same idiotic thing that happened to the golden compass: they’re making stupid changes to fit the studios vision and not keeping true to the spirit of the books, thus screwing up the movie. Again.

TheRealNeo says:

Where’s an article that an extended edition comes certainly?

I actually like the hard line here at BTTS. It’s the reality check I need. Just the facts please.

Grumman says:

It’s just been known that the release of “Harry Potter and the Half Blod Prince” has been delayed by WB from November 2008 to July 2010. There’s obviously some big trouble going on in WB. Under such atmosphere I guess it’s quite unlikely they’re considering “The Subtle Knife” for any forseeable future.

TheRealNeo says:

Its the same trouble all studios have after the writers strike and its not a financial problem its just that Warner has no summer movie next year. Justice League was planned for that but never made because of missing people and interest.

So calm down. Has no effct whether or not sequels will be made.

WJD says:

Oh please, give me a break, the first movie was just fine.

I would like to see the same cast used in the sequels but yes they have to hurry.

It’s unfortunate that people that don’t agree with something try to influence others and that others allow themselves to be influenced with out finding out for themselves.

It was a good movie and I’m sure that the sequels would be better so just make them and those that want to go see them can and those that don’t can stay home.

Haley says:

I wish The Subtle Knife movie would come out in 2009 because I don’t think I can wait until 2010 but if I have too.and I think that the end that they didn’t show at the end of The Golden Compass will be at the beging of The Subtle Knife.

September 8, 2008 2:03 am | link

Gobbler says:

So has anyone heard any news of the Sequels ?? is it happening or not?? The film Company and Phillip Pullmans owe it to the fans to let them know what is happening. I am fed up with this waiting game. Everyone seems to agree that the sequels would be great, it wone an oscar so it cant be that bad and it took $400 Million world wide.

Morris says:

wow, i feel relieved that they are at least putting a script together. I would be really upset if they didn’t make it.
