We are giving BridgetotheStars readers the opportunity to win a signed copy of ‘Discovering The Golden Compass: A Guide To Philip Pullman’s Dark Materials’ written by George Beahm with artwork by Tim Kirk (whose artwork was the subject of a contest at the end of 2007 right here at BTTS). To be in with a chance of winning, all you have to do is answer the following question:

Who plays the character Lyra in the movie adaptation of ‘The Golden Compass’?

Well,I might as well email the answer. But I wonder whats in the book, is it just all about the movie, cause I have a book about the movie already!

Ian says:

The book is about His Dark Materials in general, although it obviously includes information about the film. It also includes an essay by Philip Pullman. You can read about the book in more detail on Beahm’s website:

Or if you prefer you can see what Amazon has to say:

George Beahm says:

I wrote this book because I felt that most people who went to see the movie would not know much at all–if anything–about Philip Pullman. And in order to appreciate and understand THE GOLDEN COMPASS, it’s essential to know a little about the author and where he’s coming from—geographically, spiritually, philosophically—and what his intentions are as the storyteller.

All of this book was written BEFORE the movie came out, so there’s not a lot about the movie per se; instead, my book sheds light on the man and his magnificent, imaginative construct–the world of His Dark Materials–and the interest it’s generated over the years. (Interestingly, NORTHERN LIGHTS, the original title of THE GOLDEN COMPASS, was published in the U.K. one year prior to the first Harry Potter novel. So Pullman’s been around for a while and knows the territory well.)

So if you’ve seen the movie, my book isn’t redundant; in fact, it’ll tell you more about Pullman than you imagined possible.

The book was written with Mr. Pullman’s consent and cooperation, which is a source of joy and pride to me. I tried to do the best job I could in honoring him and his work, and from what the readers have told me, I’ve done just that. So this book project turned out the way I had envisioned, to my amazement.

Who will it be signed by,George Beahm or Philip Pullman

Ian says:

George Beahm. I never understand the point in books signed by people other than the author/illustrator…

Witch-girl says:

How many pages does it have, if anyone knows?

February 26, 2008 7:04 am | link

George Beahm says:

Folks, as a general rule, the book’s author, illustrator, and other contributor would be the only ones who sign a book. In some cases, the subject of the book–Mr. Pullman, in this case–would probably sign it, if you put a copy in front of him at a public book signing: that’s how I got a couple copies signed for myself and Tim Kirk, actually.

The page count is 206 pages plus an additional 16-page color signature of wonderful photos of Oxford by an English photographer.
