Baruch is one of two angels who guide Will to Lyra, originally intending to bring the Subtle Knife and its Bearer to Lord Asriel, making his first appearance at the end of Book II. His companion is Balthamos. Baruch perishes after being injured by a group of chasing angels, as he attempts to tell Asriel what he and Balthamos have discovered. They found that the Authority has retired deep within his fortress, the Clouded Mountain, and that Metatron rules in his stead. Also, they have discovered that Metatron intends to turn the mountain into an 'engine of war'. Baruch tells Asriel about Will and the Subtle Knife. Baruch dies before he can show Asriel where it is that Lyra is inprisoned. At his death, Balthamos emmits a great cry of sorrow.
