Chocolatl is chocolate in Lyra's world. In His Dark Materials, the word is used to refer to chocolate in solid bar form as well as the drink. The drink may refer to a beverage similar to hot chocolate made with milk and sugar or a richer drink brewed from cacao beans like coffee from coffee beans.

Etymology

The root word for chocolate is the Nahuatl (a Mayan language) word xocolatl, from xocolli and atl meaning "bitter" and "water" respectively.
