Fens
The Fens is the region in Eastern Anglia where the Gyptians gather for their Byanropings, in a building called the Zaal. The region had been settled by Dutch, thus the local language contains Dutch vocabulary. There are numerous waterways in the Fens, which consist of drained land reclaimed from the marshes. As a result, a short stretch of the River Great Ouse near Earith is tidal, even though it is a long way inland, because it is connected directly to the sea by the One Hundred Foot Drain. In our world, this low-lying part of eastern England (East Anglia) is now almost completely drained and given over to intensive vegetable-growing agriculture. In Lyra's world it is still largely marshland.
