The Land of the Dead is the underworld where all souls from all worlds go when they die. Guarded by harpies, it is neither a place of heaven nor hell, simply eternal nothingness. Lyra and Will travel here in order to talk to Roger. Finally, they open a way out, leading the dead out into the world of the Mulefa.
