The Martyr

The Martyr is a young women Will and Lyra meet in the Land of the Dead. She died hundreds of years previously and thought that dying for her faith, denying herself of pleasures and spend years in solitary prayer and sacrifice would by rewarded by eternal life in heaven. She regrets wasting her life in the service of the Church and not enjoying her time alive. She encourages the other ghosts to leave the Land of the Dead where they will become part of the physical world.
