Tokay is sweet, amber coloured, heavy wine from Hungary. At the beginning of The Golden Compass, Tokay is served to Lord Asriel in the Retiring Room of Jordan College. It is indicated that he prefers the 1898 which has been decanted especially for his (rare) visit. However, it was poisoned, and Lyra warned her "uncle" in time to save his life.
