Golden Compass TV Spots Galore
Short trailers for The Golden Compass have been running on American TV for a while now; we posted the first and second online last week; now another five have appeared online. Most feature a strong emphasis on the alethiometer (“golden compass”), but each includes different, previously unseen scenes and focuses on different aspects of the film. It’s worth watching them all if you’re an obsessive Sraffie. Here’s the first of the new bunch, with the remaining four here.

Interesting. What’s “PG-13″ in british terms then? Interesting to know if it will be a PG or 12A. I’ll bet PG.

PG-13 doesn’t actually prevent entry to unaccompanied children, unlike the UK’s 12A; so TGC will probably be a PG in the UK.

Stinks how the last few chapters were taken out. And that they are mocking us with the epic goodness of it. Ah well.
“I’m glad I lived long enough to see you.” I’ve seen that line in so many movies but I still got shivers when she said that. Excited shivers. It’ll probably make people WTF though because she’s young-looking and all.
I love how Mrs. Coulter’s line is said three different ways – “She must be found”, “It must be found”, and “He must be found”. I’m gonna take a wild stab and say that’s voice-overed and she doesn’t say those 3 lines all in the same scene.

Some of the TV spot’s formating seem too “Lord of the Rings” like plot when the story is totally different. But the SCENES are fantastic!!!! Even if they have Lord Asriel scenes, I think of it like a preview of the beginning of “The Subtle Knife”.

They should stop misleading the public by using scenes from the now deferred ending. And WHY does Hollywood feel the need to use that over-dramatic narrator for every action/drama/horror film or television advertisement ever made!? Too action-esque, but nice footage.

Who is that narrator anyway? It’s the same guy you hear voicing tonnes of other Hollywood previews right? Or maybe Hollywood keeps whole hordes of identical growly voiced men waiting in the wings just to voice trailers…

When my mother mentioned to my aunt that she’d just read the first in a very interesting trilogy of mostly-children’s books, my aunt responded “Oh! I just saw the trailer for that movie the other day. It didn’t look impressive, what am I missing?” My mom filled her in on the controversy and how much religious content is expected to be filtered out, and for that reason, she’s going to be borrowing my set of the books after my parents finish with them
Meaning that for every bunch of people who are recruited to the HDM world through shady marketing and watered-down story, there will be one or two who make it there for the right reasons.

I’m a bit confused about the ending. I know that it is deferred and they are setting it up in order to make the Subtle Knife pick up directly from the ending of The Golden Compass, but what exactly have they changed? and how have they changed it in order to please the more religious viewers?
The imagery is fantastic, and the characters (especially Craige as Asriel) are fantastic. I hope that this stays true to the books. I sincerely hope so.

Well that “I’m glad I lived long enough to see you.†one was really good and even manged to be that without the rul ethe universe crap. So let’s see how the movie look in the end …

seriously. most of these spots would make me not want to see the films if i hadn’t read the books. These people have no idea how to market this movie. It’s not the freaking compass that makes the story enticing, it’s the quest to find out what asriel is up to.
I’m hoping enough people go to see this movie so the other two can get made…please, Authority, pretty please…ah wait, never mind.

Now, if they’ve done TGC right, let’s see… One of the men who tries to kidnap Lyra is shot with an arrow in the throat and lies in a pool of his own blood; Lord Asriel kills the husband of his mistress, though it’s off-screen; the GOB is ripping children from their -souls-; the witches/gyptians fight a violent battle against the Tartar guards; Iorek slashes off Iofur’s jaw, then eats his still-beating heart…
And those are just the ones I can remember.

iofur’s armor is awesome!!i am getting tired of all this simplification of the story though(“the owner of the Golden Compass can rule the world”yeah right,:P)…however those infamous (former?)closing scenes of Asriel and the aurora are shown..perhaps they changed their mind,concerning their removal from the film(fingers crossed).We will see…
